chapter 12

EDYLENNE WAS SITTING at the table with the family of 3. There was the father, Elliot. The mother, Eleanor. And the son, Eddie.

They sat in awkward silence, when Elliot started talking.

"So, Edylenne. Where are you from?"

She didn't know how to answer, so she just shrugged her shoulders.

"How do you not know where you are from?" Eleanor asked, leaning closer to her.

Edylenne didn't respond, and showed a blank stare and leaned back into her chair.

"Do you have a family?" Elliot asked again.

"I have 5 brothers and 2 sisters. We're all adopted." Edylenne responded honestly.

Eddie's eyebrows went up in shock, and so did Eleanor's.

"Really?" Eddie asked her, sitting straight, as if he was interested in the conversation.

She simply nodded, and his jaw dropped.

"Why so many children, if I may ask?" Eleanor asked.

Edylenne hesitated. She didn't want to reveal too much about her.

"My parents just wanted a big family." Edylenne responded, trying not to sound unsure.

"What year were you born?" Eddie asked.

She hesitated. She didn't want to say she was from the future. It was 1957, she is supposed to be born 32 years later.

"44." She responded, straight eye contact locked in with Elliot.

Reginald taught them how to catch a liar. They don't keep eye contact with the speaker.

"Well, do you know where you're family is?" Eddie asked.

She shook her head, and Elliot ran his hands through his hair.

"Well, you could stay with us for as long as you need, okay honey?" Eleanor responded for Elliot.

Edylenne's face brightened. A warm, loving family accepting her with open arms. Reginald never gave her or her siblings any attention. He only cared about the powers. She was the only one who knew that.

"You'd be a guest, but for however long you need." Eleanor continued, smiling.

Edylenne smiled back. It was probably the only time that the family saw her smile. Eddie smiled at her.

"So, Edylenne. You should talk about yourself, and if you have been alright." Elliot said, sitting up straighter and leaned closer to the girl.

"Well, my brothers and sisters are all over the world right now. And my......" Edylenne didn't feel it felt right to call Reginald, 'Dad' because he wasn't a very good one.

".......my dad didn't let us go to a public school. We never went out of the house much. So, I've never really did the things that normal kids did, like go to the movies or go to a water park. So I guess I never got a real feel of being a kid."
