chapter 24
THE AIR WAS crisp as it hit Edylenne's nose. The bouquets in her hands were getting annoying holding, which made her change the bouquets from each hand. Elliot had another 2 bouquets in his hands, as they walked on the soft, muggy grass.
The cemetery was always quiet during the late fall, considering it was gonna start snowing soon. Some tombstones were covered in dirt and grim. The two passed by tombstones with dying flowers, and flags by some other tombstones for veterans.
Eddie and Eleanor's graves were at the end of the cemetery, considering they weren't buried too long ago. Edylenne had adrenaline rushing through her like a fast river. Her hands were sweating, which made her wipe it across her pants, and made her take deep breaths of nervousness.
"You okay?" Elliot asked, looking at her. She met his eyes and nodded, still walking.
They finally made it. The roses they put there a few months ago were slowly dying, and the tombstone had vases on each side. Elliot and Edylenne both changed each side with a newer set of flowers, trying not to step where he was buried.
Edylenne took the decaying roses and set them off to the side so she wouldn't accidentally step on them. She walked over to Eleanor's grave, and replaced the flowers again, with Elliot doing the same. They both stood in front of Eleanor's grave first. Her tombstone had the words, 'Mother, Wife, Sister, and mentor. 1935-1963.' Edylenne remembered waiting in the hospital for the doctors to give them some good news from that day. But, all she remembered were the sobs of Elliot and the drive home.
I had to drive home because Elliot couldn't stop crying. He sat in the passenger seat, his head thrown back against the head rest, his hands covering his face, and tears streaming down his eyes.
"Why, God? Why? My wife and son, why?" He pleaded out, which made Edylenne tear up, but she forced them back so she could focus on the road.
"Elliot, it's going to be okay." Edylenne forced out, choking back sobs. The Gussman's were like family to her. They were her second family. And it didn't feel like she lost a friend. It felt like she lost a mother. It felt like she lost a brother.
We finally got back to the store. I helped Elliot out of the car, grabbing his hands, and dragging him into the store, and as soon as we got to the top of the stairs, we embraced a hug for what seemed to be an hour. All I heard was his sobs in my ear, which seemed all too familiar. She remembered crying to Five multiple times during the apocalypse, and how he would hold her.
"Edylenne, you're all I have left. Please don't leave me." He choked out, with tears still pouring out of his eyes. Edylenne whispered back, "Of course, Elliot. I won't leave."
Eventually, Elliot went to his room to process, his eyes sore from crying. Since it was the evening, Edylenne decided to make dinner, and not make Elliot worry. She whipped up some lasagna and ambrosia salad.
They didn't say a word at dinner. The two ate in silence, since all the emotions had already been let out. Elliot now had to pay for another funeral, and bury her next to Eddie to keep the family together.
After they both finished, Edylenne had cleaned up while Elliot was on the phone with funeral services. He cried while on the phone, while the lady asked him questions that were too personal and gave him memories he didn't want to remember at the moment.
