When Harper was dropped off at school by her sister, she spotted Adam, Bree, and Chase standing at the edge of the sidewalk, looking like they'd just crawled out of bed. They were sluggish, dragging their feet with every step with their heads down.
Harper frowned, concerned. "You guys okay? You look like you haven't slept."
Bree rolled her eyes. "That's because we haven't. Our new neighbor decided last night was the perfect time to drive his car all over our front lawn. She threw her hands up in exasperation. "We barely got any rest with that going on."
"Have you tried telling him to stay off your property?" Harper asked, feeling a little bad for them.
Chase nodded. "Yeah, but that doesn't stop him from racing up and down our street."
"And not to mention, we woke up to see Mr. Davenport in his cheetah pajamas." Adam added with a dramatic shudder, as if the very memory still haunted him.
"Cheetah pajamas?" Harper repeated in confusion, trying to process the absurdity of the statement. Adam nodded, and was about to answer, but she cut him off. "Never mind. I don't want to put that image in my head."
As the four teens walked past the long line of students waiting for locker reassignments, Harper couldn't help but notice how much the atmosphere felt like a competition. Kids were milling around, gossiping and comparing their past locker experiences, some already sizing up the best spots.
Then, Chase spotted Leo standing proudly at the very front of the line. "Leo, how'd you get to be first in line for locker reassignments?"
"Oh. Since I couldn't get any sleep, I've been here since dawn." Leo explained casually.
Harper raised an eyebrow. "You didn't get your eight hours of beauty sleep?"
Leo had learned the hard way in freshman year that he needed at least eight hours of 'beauty sleep,' and if he was really pushing for the Leo Glow, it was a strict ten hours. Any less, and he'd be walking into school looking like a zombie. He had long since perfected his sleep schedule like it was a science.
"Try three. FYI, you do not want to see the lunch ladies without makeup." Leo said.
Bree's eyes widened in shock. "Wait. They wear makeup?"
"But since I'm first in line, I'll finally get the corner locker." Leo added.
"Wait a second. I thought this was the line for lice check." Adam said before clicking his tongue in disappointment and walked away.
Leo eyed the locker next to Perry's office. "There she is: Locker 106. Away from the traffic, near the cheerleaders, and I can see Principal Perry before anyone else - and a two second head start can save a life."
"Mhmm." Bree and Chase said in unison.
Without another word, they headed toward the cafeteria for breakfast, leaving Harper to linger by Leo's side, still fascinated by his dedication to his cause.
