Dan POV
"Okay, listen here kids," I heard the booming voice shout from behind me. "There was a call in about a vampire hanging out down on 23rd and Northeast street. I need a couple of newbies to go down and check it out. Seeing as it's only one vampire, I will only need five or six of you."

My hand immediately shot up into the air, accompanied by a few others. The man with the booming voice chose a few people with their hand raised, me included, and concluded what he was saying.

"Meet me in the team meeting room in five minutes with gear on." I turned and walked toward the locker room where all of my gear was located and tried to control the rapid beating in my chest. I was going to go out in the real world for the first time.

"Hey, aren't you the really young newbie?" A voice from next to me startled me, making me jump a little. "Yeah, you are, aren't you? A little jumpy, if you ask me." He stuck out his hand to me as we were walking. "My name is Caspar. And you're...Don?"

"Dan," I corrected quietly.

He walked beside me in silence until we got into the locker rooms. "I'll meet you in the meeting room," he said, then walked off to his locker.

I can't believe I'm actually going out on my first hunting mission! It's been a dream of mine ever since I was a child, and I found out my parents were killed by a vampire.

The clouds were thick outside, promising rain. My mom and dad haven't returned from their mission, so I sat at the window, watching the walkway up to the front door. It was already late, so I couldn't help but worry. I saw a dark figure walk up to the front door slowly. Even though I was eight years old at the time, I could tell it wasn't one of my parents. This person had a mysterious feel to them, as if they didn't have a past or future, only a present.

I knew my parents were part of the clan. They told me everything about them, as long as I asked. I knew about vampires and how some of them were good but most of them were truly awful beings, who only live to cause harm to humans.

I didn't move from my spot at the window until the dark figure stopped at the front door and place three knocks in the center of the wood. I rose slowly, unsure of whether I should answer the door. My curiosity took over, causing me to make my way to the door and swing it open.

The dark figure's face was hidden in the shadows, so I couldn't see its mouth moving as it said, "Dan Howell?"

I swallowed hard and nodded, forcing myself not to cry at the coldness in his voice.

"Your mother and father will not be coming home. They were murdered this evening by a pack of vampires. Come with me," said the harsh voice. I gasped and covered my mouth, but forced myself not to cry. I couldn't cry, my dad would forbid it.

"Go where?" I asked, my tiny voice quivering.

"With me," answered the cold voice, grabbing my small arm and pulling me out the front door without a coat or shoes.

I pulled a little, trying to free my arm but his grasp was too strong, so I gave up quickly.

He pulled me to our neighbors house, and knocked on the door.

A middle-aged woman answered almost immediately. She saw the dark figure first, then me, quivering behind.

She sighed softly. "Did it happen?"

I was confused at her vague question, but the dark figure nodded slowly. He gave me a small tug and pushed me inside the small house, where I was welcomed by the smell of cinnamon and oatmeal.
