Chapter Five || Addison

After a slow day at work, my boss let me leave early. I had expected to come home and relax a bit, maybe take a dip in the pool or curl up on the front porch and read the book I hadn't gotten around to finishing.

However, those expectations were squashed the moment I noticed that the white wooden fence on the side of our house was knocked over. The fence separated a certain portion of the front yards between ours and the one off to our right. My plans to relax would have to wait as I would have to go out there and see if I could fix it. Knowing that it hadn't been like that when I had left for work this morning, I assumed that it had happened sometime during the hours I was at work. I had meant to ask Lyla about it when I had first entered the house, however, upon noticing her sour mood, I had found that uncovering the reason behind her sour attitude was more entertaining that going out and fixing a fence I would more than likely have to replace.

After hearing her hilarious encounter with the second boy from next door, we sat in silence. Lyla continued to eat her Mac N Cheese balls, and I continued to enjoy the view on the TV. Derek Morgan was one handsome man. Yet, the moment Hoch drove his black SUV into a white fence and drove onto the yard, I was suddenly reminded about the mess besides our home.

"Hey, what happened to the fence?" I ask Lyla, glancing over my shoulder at her. We're sitting side by side on the couch, watching Criminal Minds. She stabs the silver fork into a mac ball and bites into it. Her eyes are glued on Reid, her favorite out of the entire cast.

"Hazel knocked it over," Lyla mumbles in a dry tone. She's still irritated about Kian, our next door neighbor who woke her up this morning, so she's eating out her frustration.

"Why didn't you go out and try to stand it back up?"

Lyla turns her attention away from Reid and gives me a blank stare. "Does it look like I'm in the mood to go out and play handyman?"

I roll my eyes and pick up the TV remote, signing out of Netflix. "You're so grumpy."

"I was about to kiss Johnny Depp!" she cries out as I push myself up from the couch and make my way towards the front door, where my shoes sit.

"Oh get over it!" I yell over my shoulder as I shove my feet into my running shoes and then proceed to open to the front door. I hear my best friend yell out "Why did you turn off the TV?!" as I step outside and let the door shut behind me. I bound down the porch steps and make my way towards the side of the house, where the fence is knocked over.

I pick up my hair and tie it back into a tight ponytail. I curse myself for not changing out of my scrubs before coming out here. With a sigh, I bend down and begin to clean up the mess that the next doors neighbor's dog made. The fence is knocked over but it isn't broken so the only thing that needs to be done is to be picked back up and shoved back down into the dirt.

"Hey!"

I look up and squint as the sun blinds me. I straighten up and cup my hand over my eyes, trying to block out the sun a bit. I see JC standing in the middle of his lawn, wearing a pair of black and grey sweats and a white tee with random holes covering it. His dark and light brown curls are hidden underneath a cap.

"Hey," I reply.

"Need some help?" he asks as he begins to walk towards me.

"Uhhh," I begin and stare down at the fallen fence. I place my hands on my hips and sigh before looking up and meeting his dark gaze. His eyes were a dark brown. They reminded me of milk chocolate, and I'm suddenly craving chocolate. I mentally sigh, cursing my pre-menstrual cravings. "Yeah, please, I'd really appreciate it."
