A U T H O R S  N O T E: Oh my gosh, so this is by far the longest chapter I've ever written; and also happens to be my favorite. Think you can figure out why? ;-) xo Christine

Chapter Twelve || Lyla

It's nearing ten a.m and instead of sleeping in until noon like usually, I woke up around nine o'clock so I could shower and head over to the shelter.

Normally I work during the week, some Saturday's, and every other Sunday; however, during the middle of the week, a Samaritan dropped off a box of abandoned puppies at the shelter and although they were at a well age, I still worried about leaving them in the kennels alone. Especially since today was Carl's day to tend to the puppies; and puppies weren't his forte.

"You're up early," Addison says shockingly as she walks into the kitchen and opens the refrigerator. Addy's always the one to wake up early every day to run just before sunrise and usually when she comes home I'm still sound asleep in bed. "I'm going to the shelter," I say while chewing an apple slice. "You don't work this Sunday," she states while uncapping her water bottle and tilting her head back as she took a long gulp.

"I'm checking on the puppies," I reply, noticing how she ditched her usual work out of attire of regular t-shirt and shorts for knee high yoga pants and a sports bra, "how was your run?"

Addison pulls out a bar stool and props herself upon the seat, "great, I won."

"Sure he didn't just let you win?" I tease, remembering how JC planned to join her on her run this morning. Addison rolls her eyes, "you sound like him."

I laugh and open the fridge, grabbing my sports bottle while Addison finishes the rest of her water and hops off the chair. "Alright, I'm going to shower."

"Good cause you smell," I say pinching my nose and waving my hand in the air. Addison gasps and tosses her empty water bottle at me. I duck in time for the bottle to fly over my head and land on the floor. "Ha ha," I coo and stick out my tongue before rushing towards the front door, "byeee!"

Walking down the drive way, I unlock the door and slide in. Once I turn on the car, I crank up the AC and turn on the radio before putting the car in reverse and backing down the driveway.

As I stop at the end of the driveway I glance over to my right and notice Kian sitting on the edge of the curb, captured by the phone in his hands. Furrowing my brows, I put my car in park and turn down the radio then roll down the window.

"What are you doing?"

Kian notices my appearance and stands, brushing the back of his jeans off then slides his phone in his back pocket. "I'm waiting for my Uber," he says leaning on the door, then bends his head so he can see inside the open window.

"What's wrong with your car?" I ask. "I can't find me keys because..." he glances towards his house and raises his voice, "SOMEONE hid my fucking keys." I jump as his voice rises then laugh, "I doubt they could actually hear you." He grins and laughs along, "you'd be surprised." Touche.

Our laughter subsides and I glance over my shoulder towards the road, noticing his Uber driver has yet to arrive. Tapping my thumbs on the steering wheel, I glance back at Kian, who's watching my thumbs.

"Why don't I give you a ride?"

Kian smiles and shakes his head, "nah, it's cool, thanks though." I roll my eyes and unlock the passenger side door, "just get in." Kian pulls his phone out of his pocket and opens the car door.

"Are you sure?" he asks, going through his contacts and clicking on Uber. I nod and put my car in reverse then back out to the street, "I wouldn't have offered if I wasn't..." I glance his way through the corner of my eye, "are you sure?"
