The New Kid

I entered the girls' locker room to find some of the cheerleaders already inside.

They didn't have to come for try outs but they decided to share some good luck to the aspiring football players.

I'm actually certain most of them are here because of the rumors going on about the new kid and I was proved right when I overheard a bunch of them talking about him.

'I heard he's amazing on the field', Nicole, I recognized as a red head from my English class, addressed the others.

'Yeah. I heard he's so good he might even become captain', Tess, one of her friends screeched.

Now I really couldn't wait to see how good he really was for these girls to be saying he could be better than Mark.

As far as I know, Mark's the only one I've see that actually has the qualifications to be captain.

I changed into a pair of red shorts and a white top that had the team's logo of an eagle on the front.

Most of the cheerleaders were already done and had made their way to the field so I didn't waste time doing the same.

On the field, the cheerleaders were already doing some stretches. 'Nice to know you all know what to do', I said addressing them. 'Now let's give those boys a bit of luck.'

We all got into position and delivered a flawless routine to start the try outs.

A series of applause was heard as soon as we were done. The coach, players and the students trying out were a few feet away ready to start.

A smile was evident on my face as I moved to where they were as I left the cheer team to themselves.

I don't think I mentioned this but I'm not only the coach's assistant but also the head cheerleader and a lot of other things you'll find out later.

'There's my favorite head cheerleader', Coach spoke once I joined the team, 'Boys, you remember Sophie', he said addressing the guys.

I waved as I got a few cheers and nods from them while Mark gave me a two finger salute as he smirked.

Then coach introduced me to the boys trying out, Kevin, Aiden, Axel, David, Blake, Derek, Michael, Raymond, Ethan and Jason.

They all had the looks of a typical football player, tall, broad and definitely able to tackle a few guys on the field.

Most of them were sophomores I'd seen before in the hallways except one, Jason.

He must've been the new kid everyone was talking about.

He had black hair with blue eyes, he was taller than all the boys trying out and definitely had a good relationship with puberty judging by his broad shoulders and evident muscles on his arms.

'So what do you have planned for today Sophie?', Coach asked.

I pulled out the schedule from the bag I brought to the field and then handed it to him. He looked at it and gave a simple nod of approval and motioned for me to take charge.

I grinned mischievously at the boys saying, 'Are you ready?'

At the end of try outs, everyone sweating profusely and gasping for breath, some lay on the ground like they couldn't get up.

The other players looked relieved like they were silently celebrating they didn't go through it.

'You've outdone yourself again Sophie', Coach said laughing at the state of the boys.

'This was supposed to be a simple warm up. I have no idea how they all ended up like this.' I said looking over my schedule.

'Maybe it's because you made us repeat the entire schedule fifteen times', Derek said exasperated.

'That was to check endurance', I replied nonchalantly.

'Okay, that's enough! line up boys.' Coach yelled as the boys followed the instruction despite their obvious fatigue.

'Now, we only have an opening for two players and Sophie is going to decide who those two are', he said.

'Well, it's not a very hard decision even though all of you did great', I said.

You could feel the tension from each of them before I finally said, 'Axel and Jason. Welcome to the team.'

Both guys were thrilled but obviously the others weren't very happy they weren't chosen.

'We do need another quarterback though', Coach reminded me.

'Of course', I started, 'Jason is qualified for that', I said sincerely, with his current stamina, endurance and strength, the position fitted him perfectly.

All we had to do is see if he could lead the offense well in the upcoming practices.

Coach seemed satisfied with my decision as he went to address the team and the new players as the others left.

I didn't pay much attention as I gathered my things and headed to the locker room with the other cheerleaders that were still watching.

I did hear something about they would celebrate the new players at Mark's party.

I changed into my clothes and headed out of the locker room only to collide into a solid surface of pure muscle making me lose my balance a little.

'Sorry', I said as I regained my posture.

'No problem', came an unfamiliar voce.

When I looked at the face of the person I crashed into, I immediately recognized it as Jason.

'Hey, it's nice to meet you. I'm Jason. Jason Sparks', he said stretching his arm forward for a handshake.

I returned the gesture, his hand firm but had a certain softness. I replied saying, 'Nice to meet you too, I'm...'

'Sophia, right?', he cut in, 'Coach's assistant and apparently... Cheer captain?' He said letting go of my hand.

'That's me. Sophia Carson', I said smiling when I saw the smile on his face.

'Well, I better get going. See you around maybe?', he said.

'Sure. Afterall, you're part of the now', I said.

'Yeah. Thanks for choosing me by the way', he said.

'You deserved it.', I simply stated as he slowly started walking away.

'Thanks', he said as he left waving at me.

Just then, a bunch of girls still lingering in the hallways started to point at his retreating figure as they whispered among themselves.

I couldn't help but also stare saying, 'So that's the new kid... Interesting.' Then I turned towards the other exit and left the building.
