I headed straight for my white convertible in the parking lot. The car was a gift for my sweet sixteen but I'm definitely expecting a new one on my 18th birthday and when that happens, I'm not going to waste a second before this one is sold.
I got in the car and started the ten minute drive from the school to my house.
I already knew my parents wouldn't be home but I couldn't help hoping I would at least see one of their cars in the driveway.
When I met it empty, that hope immediately died.
In a way, I was used to not having my parents home. My father was the CEO of Tech. CO, one of the largest companies in the country while my mother was a well known surgeon, the best in country, so they were usually very busy.
I parked the car in the garage and made my way into the massive house with way too many rooms for just me.
I passed the living room and climbed up the stairs heading for my room but I couldn't help but hover in front of a certain door.
I opened the door and peeked into the room, still the same as it was years ago.
'I wish you were here', I whispered into the quiet room before closing the door and slipping into my own room.
My room was designed to mimic the perfect sunset. shades of orange, pink, yellow and blue blended together perfectly to create that image.
I dropped my bag next to my reading table, plopped on my bed and brought out my headphones as I surrounded myself with music.
There wasn't a lot of homework I needed to do so I lay there for an hour before finally deciding I was going to Mark's party.
I was at Mark's house at 9pm, his house was huge but it wasn't as big as mine. There were different cars parked in front of his house as well as around the neighborhood. I could hear the faint sound of music a mile away.
I found a spot to park my car and made my way inside. I wore a white crop top paired with black shorts and left my hair to fall. Nothing too much.
The front lawn was already decorated with red solo cups and teenagers, a few sober but the majority were either tipsy, horny or just plain drunk. I think I saw one kid already hunched over the bushes.
I slipped past the people hovering in front of the door and made my way to the back, were the real party was.
There was a huge pool at the back that was already a bit preoccupied with people. Others were either talking, dancing or drinking at the bar. I'm very sure there was a group of people hurdled up to play beer pong somewhere.
I started heading to the bar but didn't even make it halfway before someone wrapped an arm around my shoulder.
I looked at the culprit to find Mark beaming at me as he led us to were the rest of the team was.
'I'm glad you came', he said, his smile still intact.
'Just be lucky I got bored at home', I said, my tone serious. He burst into laughter and I couldn't help but do the same.
'Seriously though, I'm happy you're here', he said still smiling as we came to a halt.
The entire team, even the new players were gathered together with the cheerleaders celebrating the addition.
'Hey guys. Look who decided to join the party', Mark yelled over the music catching everyone's attention.
There were a few hoots and whistles from the team when they saw me. 'Cool you could make it', Alex said. 'Well there was no way I would miss out on this', I said.
Mark didn't leave my side as I started to blend in with their discussions and jokes, Mark handed me a few drinks during that time.
After a while a few of them started to head out to dance. 'Why don't you show us some of your moves Sophie', Mark yelled challenging me with his eyes.
I was never one to turn down a challenge. 'Only if you come with me', I said smiling sweetly.
'No problem', he replied smirking. The others cheered us on as we danced together, our movements matching the upbeat music playing through the speakers.
We went back to the group after dancing to a few songs.
There were only a few of them who still stuck around, the others were scattered across the place. I suddenly realized someone was missing - Jason.
'Hey Mark. Did Jason come to the party? I haven't see him', I said. 'He said he wouldn't be able to make it', he answered, 'Why do you ask?'
'No reason, I just noticed he wasn't here', I said. He nodded as he handed me a drink.
I wasn't planning to stay at the party for a long time so when I checked my watch and found out I was a few minutes past 11, I sneaked out of the house without anybody noticing.
They had already started playing beer pong with some other guys in school when I stepped out of the house.
I made my way to my car, the fresh air already engulfing me. A car suddenly passed me at an ungodly speed on the empty streets.
That wasn't even what got me frozen on the sidewalk it was the driver that had me shook.
Jason was driving the car with a little girl at the back. His expression was that of worry while the girl had a hand on her chest, her breathing was visibly unstable as she looked like she was in pain.
I was only able to catch a glimpse of the two figures but I was certain it was Jason at the wheel.
I finally willed my body to move and enter my car. I drove home, entered my room and sent a quick text to Mark telling him I already left the party.
I went to bed in an empty house but a mind filled with questions.
