Tyler and Asher kept shifting their gazes between me and themselves.
That went on for a while before I finally got fed up, ‘Would you guys just answer the question?’
They finally settled their gaze on me but none of them said anything like they were both expecting the other one to say something.
I was getting more annoyed by the second until that annoyance turned to realization when I remembered something Jason had told me a while back.
‘Ty and Ash…’ I said, ‘Tyler and Asher. That’s it’.
Both of them looked at me like I had lost it.
‘You two are Jason’s best friends, aren’t you?’ It wasn’t a question, I was stating a fact and the look on their faces proved that.
‘You aren’t wrong’, Tyler said.
‘Yeah but it was meant to be a secret’, Asher pouted.
‘Why?’ I asked.
‘It wasn’t initially our idea but Jason didn’t necessarily want others to think we got in because of him. I honestly thought that was a stupid reason but here we are’, Tyler explained.
‘I’ll have to agree it was stupid but why didn’t you guys just come to school earlier?’, I asked.
‘We had to take care of a few things back in our old school’, Asher explained.
‘Now could you do us a favor and not tell Jason you already found out? The other reason this was a secret was to surprise you’, Tyler said with pleading eyes.
‘Sure I can do that’.
‘Great. When he introduces us on Monday just ask surprised’ Asher said with a smile.
‘No problem. Besides it’s been a while since I practiced my acting’, I said.
‘Thanks. I guess we’ll see you Monday’, Asher said as the both of them entered their car. They waved before driving off while I got into my own car and drove home.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Unlike most people, I was really looking forward to Monday and finally it was here. The weekends stretched out too long leaving me with absolutely nothing to do.
I walked through the halls as happy as ever heading for my locker only to find Jason standing next to his.
‘Hey Soph. How was your 48hrs of no school’, he asked as soon as he saw me.
‘Well fortunately for me, those hours were shortened since I had to come to school on Saturday’, I answered as I opened my locker.
‘Well that’s too bad’, he said as I took one good look at the look on his face.
‘Someone seems happy. May I ask why?’, I said collected my books and closed my locker.
‘No, you may not’, he answered.
‘And why not?’, I said even more curious now.
‘That’s because it’s not your concern…yet’.
Before I could say anything else, Tyler and Asher came towards us and greeted Jason with bro hugs.
I remembered I was meant to act surprised so I put on a confused look when Jason looked at me.
‘Remember I told you about my two best friends’, he said, I nodded.
‘Well let me formerly introduce you to Ty and Ash. They just came to school and they’re already on the team’.
‘I already know who they are’, I said as Tyler and Asher gave me a look while Jason just looked confused.
‘What do you mean?’
‘I’m coach’s assistant, remember? Who do you think held their tryouts?’, I said.
‘Oh right’, he said scratching the back of his head.
‘Yeah but I had no idea they were your friends. No wonder they were so good or the other way around?’, I commented.
‘We taught him everything he knows’, Asher said proudly.
‘Yeah right’, Jason rolled his eyes.
‘I didn’t hear any denial’, Tyler commented.
Jason was about to say something when Asher interrupted, ‘Quick run before he starts the history of how he started playing’.
Asher grabbed my hand and raced down the hall with Tyler hot on our heels while Jason just stood there annoyed not bothering to chase after us.
After school we all agreed to hang out at Jason’s since there was no practice.
‘Finally back at the crib’, Ty said when Jason opened the doors.
‘Dibs on the couch’ Ash screamed as he raced towards the couch and landed on it with a thud spreading himself on it leaving no space for anyone else.
Jason and Ty exchanged looks before they both jumped on Ash as he let out a loud groan.
‘Ty? Ash? Is that you?’, Angel’s voice called as she descended down the stairs.
‘Well look who it is. My favorite Sparks’, Ash said after successfully escaping the brutal attack. He gathered up into a quick hug with Ty following shortly after.
‘Have you grown taller?’, Ash asked.
‘Yup and very soon I’ll be taller than both of you’, she said.
They both laughed before Ty said, ‘Keep dreaming’.
Feeling like a forgotten soldier, I slowly made my way to the couch when Jason suddenly said, ‘Guess who else is here?’
All eyes landed on me at that instant.
‘Hi’, I said.
‘Sophie!’, Angel said as she rushed to hug me leaving two pouting boys behind her.
‘I’m not going to lie, I thought Jason wouldn’t bring you back here but I’m so happy to see you.Jason’s always talking about you, he’s always talking about how cute you are or how smart you are. Oh there was even that one time…’.
‘Okay that’s enough’, Jason said covering her mouth while Ty and Ash laughed.
‘Now that she’s finally stopped talking. What do you guys want to do first?’, Jason asked.
‘Let’s play your Xbox. I missed beating you in God of War‘, Ash said.
‘Good luck beating Soph then’, Jason said as he set up the Xbox.
‘Are you that good’?’, Ty asked.
‘I’m mid’, I said
‘And Sophie wins… Again. What a shame boys. What a shame’, Angel said as I gave her a high five while the boys kept grumbling saying the game was rigged.
‘Come on boys, cheer up. You can’t always win’, I said.
‘Yeah but you can?’ Jason said.
‘That’s because I’m special’
‘Whatever’, he said.
‘How long have the three of you known each other anyway?’, I said trying to change the topic.
‘Since we were five’, Jason answered.
‘We grew up together’, Ty added.
‘I was like the leader back then, always keeping these two in check’, Ash said sighing like he was recalling a distant memory.
‘Yeah right. Like you weren’t the one always getting in trouble’, Ty said.
‘And we always had to bail you out’, Jason continued.
‘Must be nice to be that close’, I said.
‘You don’t have any close friend?’, Ty asked.
‘Nope’
‘Siblings?’, Ash asked.
I shook my head, ‘How about you guys, any sibling?’
‘An older sister, she’s 21. You probably won’t meet her anytime soon. She doesn’t usually come around’, Ash said.
‘I don’t have any’, Ty said.
‘Well, I have an annoying older brother. Must be nice to be an only child’, Angel mused.
‘It’s not like you’re any better’, Jason said rolling his eyes.
‘It’s a bit lonely but there are benefits’, Ty said.
‘Not exactly’, I muttered under my breath.
‘Hey Sophie. Why don’t you introduce us to some of your girlfriends, I’m sure we’d get along well’, Ash said with a cocky smile.
‘Well I could introduce you to any girl in school but I doubt they’ll be into…that’, I said waving my hands in his direction.
Everyone laughed including Ash.
‘Jokes apart though, it’d be nice to meet some of your friends’, Ty said.
‘I don’t really have friends’, I said.
‘Isn’t Mark a friend?’, Ash asked.
‘Kind of, but not really’, I answered.
‘Suddenly I’m invisible’, Jason said feigning offence.
‘What do you mean?’, I asked.
‘Now I’m really getting offended. I thought we were friends Soph?’, Jason said.
‘Well, I didn’t… I didn’t really think…’ I said.
‘You’re stammering. You never stammer’.
‘Well…’
‘Looks like I’m doing a great job bringing out a less perfect you’.
‘Congratulations Sparks. Do you need a prize?’
‘As a matter of fact, I do’.
‘Are you guys done? The conversation is getting boring’, Angel said.
‘Then you’re always free to leave’, Jason said with a sweet smile while Angel just rolled his eyes.
‘Anyway, Jason isn’t your only friend now’, Ash said.
‘Yeah. If you’re going to be friends with that dumbass might as well be friends with us too to ensure you don’t go insane’, Ty said.
‘As much as I don’t like the fact I was called a dumbass’, Jason said glaring at Ty, ‘He’s right, we’re a team now’.
‘I guess that means our trio is being broken but our new member is more than welcome’, Ash said giving me a side hug.
‘Quit the flattery Ash’, Jason said hitting his shoulder before turning to me, 'I hope you know you don’t have a choice’.
‘I could always make a break for it. I might be able to make it to my car in time’, I said.
‘Don’t even think about it’, Jason said laughing.
‘Welcome to the team’, Ty said.
