"You said that I don't care what happens to you or myself while I'm out on missions...that is far from the truth. You're wrong," Mark admitted with a slight shrug.
The older brought his rough hands to gently cup Donghyuck's face, swiping the younger's teary eyes dry with his thumbs.
"I-I don't understand," Donghyuck stated.
Bull shit. He very much did understand but he wanted to hear Mark say it out loud. He can not stand having to always sit there and interpret what Mark is trying to say from other people.
"But in a lot of ways you're right...You really don't know how much I care about you because I don't really express it and I'm sorry for hurting you," Mark apologized for the very first time which shocked the younger.
"I want you to know that it's okay to be sensitive and vulnerable..and you most certainly can be so around me," Mark kindly spoke, his thumbs now softly caressing Donghyuck's cheeks.
"I also want you to know something about me.." Mark began. "There is never a time where I go out on a mission or have to leave for whatever reason, that I'm not thinking about you. You have no idea how much you're on my mind."
"Just as you're afraid to lose me, I'm scared that I won't be able to fulfill my duty to protect you from the enemy because if something were to happen to you, I'd lose myself," Mark honestly told him. "And when I lose myself, it's hard to come back which is something else I'm scared of. I'm scared of you witnessing me lose myself because then you might actually see me as a monster for real."
Donghyuck shook his head vigorously in Mark's hands. "No, you're not a monster."
Mark smiled sadly, his eyes becoming glossy as he shut his eyes for a few moments to open them again.
"I am a monster, Donghyuck."
"No you're not!" Donghyuck yelled, feeling emotionally hurt because of Mark saying such things. "I didn't know what i was saying before when I first found out about you being in a mafia. Mark, please...you're not a monster. Y-you protect me from the bad people!"
"I'm glad you don't think so..but somebody else used to believe I was," Mark said, pursing his lips together as Donghyuck placed his hands on top of Mark's were still on his cheeks.
"Who?! Who do I need to fight?! No, who do I need to kill?!" Donghyuck furrowed his eyebrows angrily as Mark chuckled softly.
"Shhh," Mark hushed the younger. "She's already dead," Mark sadly said with a shrug. "I miss her."
Donghyuck stood quiet for a few seconds, realizing who Mark may be talking about...his mother.
Mark released Donghyuck's cheeks to pull the younger's hand and guide them to sit on the bed.
"My mom never called me a monster to my face, but she did call my dad a monster and told him that she doesn't want me becoming a monster like him because he was training my older brother and I to be in the gang," Mark recalled the memory of his younger self witnessing his parents argument in the living room.
"My parents never got along and were only together because they were soulmates but then one day, my dad rejected her and killed off their soulmate bond which resulted in her dying in the end," a single tear escaped his eye.
Donghyuck sat there, listening to Mark and very shocked with what he was telling him. Donghyuck was not expecting this at all.
And from the very little of what Donghyuck is hearing, a lot of it makes sense as to the reason why Mark is today.
"I've been trained into this mafia for a very long time like you said. Actually, I began training for it since I was a little boy. And back then, my mom was heart and soul until my dad destroyed that and took her away from me. I hate him, Donghyuck. He took my only source of love, comfort, and happiness at the time away from me just so I can 'grow up and act like a real man,'" Mark remembered, irritation and hatred very evident in his voice.
