JJ held Ruby on his lap as they sat on the boat, everyone else was catching up over what they'd missed but something felt off to Ruby, she couldn't bring herself to feel the same excitement everyone else had.

She'd noticed JJ's lingering stare on the bandage on her shoulder- she couldn't bring herself to say what happened out loud.

Not to mention she could feel the jealousy practically radiating off of Kiara, making a twisting feeling settle in the pit of her stomach.

" what happened to you..?" JJ murmured, snapping Ruby out of her thoughts, there was a distance in her eyes that he'd never seen before.

" Rafe shot me.." Ruby whispered, her voice shaky as he pulled her tighter against him, refusing to let her go.

The guilt he felt only grew bigger in that moment, he put her on that boat- he paused as she gently placed her hand on his cheek, tired hazel eyes were peering up at him, silently saying it wasn't his fault.

He'd never seen a more broken look in her eyes then in that moment- she wasn't his Ruby anymore.

" if there's someone else it's okay.. you aren't forced to stay with me.." She said quietly, glancing over at Kiara then back to him.

He held the sides of her face, placing a few gentle kisses on her lips, "I don't want anyone else.." He said, watching as she searched his eyes for any trace of a lie.

She visibly relaxed once she realized he was telling the truth, curling herself closer to him as he held her tightly.

The tears she had been holding in finally slipped until she was full on sobbing in his arms, not even noticing the concerned and confused looks everyone else was giving her.

But JJ did the best he could to hide Ruby's face- he knew once she calmed down she would be humiliated for showing an ounce of weakness.

She always made herself the strong one, but how could she be strong when she was broken?

He only held her tighter, having one thought in his mind.

He needed to make her feel okay again.
