Blythe shut the door to her classroom with a sigh of relief. Everything was done for the day. She just needed to get her room tidied up, and then she could go home.

She straightened the desks, wiping down any grimy surfaces, and laying out the morning warm-ups.

She loved the days where she could go straight home after a day like today, but she had several errands to run.

She had to go into town to appeal a parking ticket she had received over the weekend. Her meter still had time on it when she got back to her car. There was no reason for her to have a ticket.

She could've done the whole procedure online, but the old website had refused to accept a copy of her driver's license. The office of transportation was located in the courthouse downtown, and she was annoyed by the hassle of all of it.

Blythe took her bag and went out to her car. She was twenty-five, and happy with where she was in life. She taught second graders, had a nice apartment and a good car. Everything was right, but that didn't stop the feelings of loneliness that consumed her.

She had done everything she could to make friends. She liked the girls she worked with, and sometimes they would hang out together. Blythe even had joined a book club at one point.

It still wasn't easy though. Everyone was coupled off, and she was always the odd one out.

She was getting better about being optimistic about it, but she wished she had just that one good friend that she saw at least once a week, a consistent person to keep up with her life.

The courthouse was packed for being nearly four in the afternoon. There was a line for security, and Blythe's patience was running thin. She knew she was going to get stuck in some horrific rush hour traffic because of this.

She pushed the button for the elevator, trying to ignore the handsome guy in a suit standing next to her. He was on his phone, looking like he was concentrating very hard on the conversation.

The elevator beeped, and she stepped on, pushing the button for the fourth floor.

The rest of her time went smoothly. It took longer for her to stand in line then it did for them to dismiss her parking ticket.

She shifted her tired feet, looking around for a bathroom and a vending machine. She was thirsty, and ready to be home. She considered stopping through a drive-thru for her dinner tonight instead of cooking.

This time around, the elevator took forever to get to her. When it finally came down to her floor, it had three towering men in it. One of them was the guy in the suit from earlier. One of them was holding a very nice looking cowboy hat, and the other was covered in paint splatters.

The button for the ground floor was already pushed, and Blythe tried to relax despite the claustrophobic feeling that crept up her neck.

She had every right to feel that way. Just as the elevator reached the third floor, the lights went out, and the lift came to a terrifying halt that jerked her whole body.

That wasn't the end of it. The sudden stop must've created some other issue because it felt like she was falling. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping it was all some nightmare that she was going to wake up from.
