I could hear, from outside my bedroom door. The quite whispers and gently patter of feet moving up and down the floorboards on the landing. The quite argues and frustrations to get it right. The beckoning of my younger siblings by my parents to stand in a straight line. This was it.
The door knob slowly began too turn and rattle. I snuggled deeper under the bed covers pretending to be asleep. The quite creaks of heavy foot prints slowly made their way over to me. The placement of said feet spread out from around my bed so the were surrounding it. And then it began...
"Happy birthday to you... Happy birthday to you... Happy birthday dear Emma. Happy birthday to you." I 'sleepily' turned over and opened my heavy eyes to see my family surrounding my bed with huge smiles on their face. But... Something strange. Pink, and purple, and green. Blue, black, and yellow. I lifted my gaze to above my head and noticed dozens of balloons hanging above me. Some had a vouchers hanging on the ends of them, Victoria secret, bed bath and beyond, urban outfitters. Some contained photos with messages on.
"Oh guys, you didn't have to do all this." I finally advert my gaze from the colourful balloons and look down at the smiling gazes of my family as I fake my own.
"But we wanted too. Happy birthday Emma, my little girl is finally an adult. You're not so little I suppose anymore." My mother held back sobs as she held a gigantic cake in her hands. "Quick, quick. Make a wish." I lent forward and closed my eyes tightly. I already knew what I would be wishing for. I huffed out a tight blow and watched as the smoke rose and danced above our heads. "Well, hurry up and get out of bed, you have a birthday breakfast too eat. We'll open presents when everyone else arrives." I forced a smile and nodded.
"Okay, I'll be down in a second." A few hugs and kisses exchanged and they were gone again. Eighteen. Eighteen. The big one eight. I threw my cover off myself and headed downstairs to my family in the kitchen, on the breakfast table there was practically a whole buffet of food, bacon, cereal, fruit, pain au chocolate, pancakes, waffles, chocolate covered strawberries, juice. It was an incredible sight to see. I hated it. I have eaten very little in two weeks and the sight of this wasn't helping. I grabbed some of the strawberries and claimed that I wasn't too hungry.
"You honestly didn't need to go through all of this trouble." Im told my father.
"Are you kidding me? You're my baby girl and you've turned eighteen. Of course we were going to make a big deal." He wrapped a protective arm around me and kissed my temple.
"Well, I'm very grateful. Thank you so much."
"So what do you want to do today? Olive, Jacob, summer and you're father and I are going to collect gramps and grandma at three o'r clock, then we open present and then we head to you're favourite restaurant of all time." Oh good God. That was the last thing I wanted to do.
"Ummm I think I'm just going to stay at home today, I don't read feel like doing too much so I would rather just spend the day relaxing."
"That sounds lovely dear. Why don't you watch some movies with Jacob and Olive to pass the time." I smiled at the thought and grabbed Jacobs hand.
"EWWW get off I don't want to."
"Umm my birthday, my rules. Come on please? I'll be you're personal slave on you're birthday." I offered the deal to him and he placed his finger on his lip thinkingly.
"Hmmm... Fine, but you have to do every thing I say." He argued.
"I promised." I crossed my heart and pulled him along to join Olive on the sofa.
