“What are we all doing for Halloween?”
I looked up from my lunch tray at Monique as she glanced around at all of us waiting for a response.
It had been a few days since Jon and I kissed.
The kiss, so deliciously sweet and satisfying.
I had not told anybody yet, of course being grounded I had only been to Jon’s swim meet and school since Saturday night. I smiled unconsciously remembering how Jon would give me a wink of the eye each time before he dived in the pool making my heart flutter. He had won for his team the four hundred meter backstroke and got a new personal best which isn’t much, just a couple of tenths of a second but it matters in the sport.
Jon and I have not had a chance to talk about what happened yet either. I wasn’t sure where to begin regardless. It was obvious he wanted to be around me more since he hardly left my side from the start of each school day to the finish except for the classes we weren’t in together.
Tony didn’t get caught for sneaking out on Saturday and I wished he had because he almost ruined the moment. He seemed to get away with a lot more than I did even if I was with him or not when we got in trouble or caught. I was becoming more determined to find out why.
So here we were two weeks before Halloween. Monique, Tony, Jon and I at lunch on chilly gray clouded October day. I did notice, however, that Tony was watching Jon and I closer this week than he had before and being quite obvious about it. All of his odd behavior made me more suspicious about what he and Jon were keeping from me.
“I don’t know yet,” I answered quietly unsure of what to say, wondering if Jon would want to go as a pair together or not. I knew I would have to stop by the group home for my dad’s Halloween thing. I did so every year with my mom and dad. During the holidays we always made something for all the boys and staff for each holiday. We had already gotten started on the Halloween candy baskets for this year, werewolf themed.
“You still do the Halloween thing for your dad?” Tony asked.
“Yeah I only will have to stop by to hand out the baskets.”
“Why don’t we all go as something together,” Jon spoke up and we all turned to look at him.
“Like what?” Monique asked.
“Goldilocks and the three bears?”
“No I’m not dressing up as that I will end up being one of the bears,” I chuckled.
“What foursome things are there?” Monique said and everyone got quiet in thought brainstorming on what we could do since most things came in three’s.
“I got it,” Tony blurted out a few moments later and waited for all of our attention to be on him before he spoke again.
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,”
Monique and I were both about to wrinkle our noses but the idea seemed to settle in our minds and work as we thought about it and our faces smoothed out in approval even though all the ninja turtles were guys. We could get the colored eye covers and green outfits, my mom could help me make turtle shells since I had the artsy skill and it wouldn’t take too long since we were just going trick or treating and to Mark’s Halloween party.
