Never before have I felt so nervous or insecure to enter Jon and Tony’s house. Usually I just walked right in as if I lived there too.

I stood there on the porch shifting from one foot to the other. My hand moved up and down as if I was pulling an invisible slot machine handle, debating on whether or not to knock or just turn the knob letting myself in.

Everything that has happened in the last two days – has it really only been two days? I shook my head, everything that has happened with Jon and the arrival of his sister just made this all harder. I had no idea if she knew or if he or anyone else would tell her about the incident. The possibility made me more nervous. How Jon will treat me made me ache in my chest. Would Tony still be by my side as my friend?

I jumped when the door opened my eyes widened in surprise. I felt my heart stop in my chest for a moment as I looked into Jon’s eyes.

Why did he have to look so good today? His hair a mess on his head but as if it was meant to be that way. A fitted shirt with the school’s swim team logo on the left side told me he must have been out swimming this morning. His ragged old jeans that I liked seeing him in but he didn’t know it yet. We never had a chance so far to have those kinds of conversations.

We both just stood there like statues for a few minutes staring at each other.

“I saw a shadow on my way up to my room and figured it might be you considering what time it is,” Jon said lifting his hand pointing at the window.

“Oh right, I just uh, wasn’t sure if I should walk right in with Shannon being here and all,” I said quietly, stumbling over my words.

“She’s in the kitchen.”

I nodded stiffly, while he shifted rocking on the balls of his feet, just barely rocking. The awkward sensation between us made my heart crack in two a little.

“So, come on in, I have to go get our things.”

“Okay.”

He moved to the side of the door as I stepped in and walked past him. I almost blushed because I inhaled a deep breath taking in his scent and feeling his body heat as I brushed by him. I turned to say how sorry I was again but he had already taken off and up the stairs to his bedroom. I didn’t follow. Instead I made my way to the kitchen to say hi to Shannon even though I did not like her and she despised me. It is the polite thing to do.

I heard her low throaty voice talking to her mother and Tony as I approached. My stomach clenched nervously that she might know what was going on.

“Hey.” I said announcing my entry. They all turned to greet me. Aunt Lily gave me a sympathetic smile, guess that meant she knew and my hopes that Shannon had not been told began to fall.

“Hey Abi,” Tony greeted me enthusiastically with a grin on his face and bounced over to me pulling me into a tight hug. Through Tony’s embrace I noticed Shannon minutely rolling her eyes, trying to be subtle but I saw it.

“Hey Lily,” I said when he let me go. Tony enjoyed antagonizing his older sister about her dislike of me because he knew he was the bad influence for the most part.
