“Dinner,” Lily called.

Three days have passed since I moved in ‘temporarily’ with Jon. So far so good and quiet. My parents stopped by often one or the other to make sure I was okay and because they missed me. I was sure to check on my behavior as well.

The differences were significant. The most amusing part for me was Tony’s constant antagonizing of his sister, mostly at dinner. I always looked forward to that.

I put down my sketchpad I had been working on with a new idea that came to me over the last couple of days. School was normal, though Becca and Zach steered clear of us now, which made things much more peaceful there.

Jon was much freer with his affection at his house. Mostly because his parents didn’t mind as much. One rule was already certainly broken, since I slept in the same bed as Jon, and it was bliss to curl up in his arms every night. I fell asleep so easily listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat and soft rise and fall of his chest as he breathed.

I almost ran into Tony, lost in my thoughts as I made my way to my spot at the dining table. He was dodging a dinner biscuit being thrown at him by his sister. Instead, the biscuit hit me in the cheek. I blinked and brushed the crumbs off my cheek picking it up from the floor.

“Sorry Abi,” Shannon said begrudgingly.

“It’s okay.” I tossed the biscuit in the trash as I sat down. Jon had not come home from swimming practice yet, but he should be here any minute.

“Abi come grab this,” Lily called shrilly.

I jumped right back up to help her with the chicken tray out of the oven, she was about to drop it. Shannon’s hands were full with a basket of biscuits, coleslaw and mashed potatoes to set on the table. KFC had nothing on Lily’s chicken.

“Where is everybody?” Lily grumbled once we were seated again and everything was ready. Jon and Brandon still had not made it home yet.

“Jon’s at practice still, though should be back soon.” I spoke as I dished up my plate.

“Dad’s still at work.” Tony said as he threatened to fling mashed potatoes at Shannon who glared at him as if lasers could shoot out of her eyes and strike him down in one shot.

“Tony stop bugging your sister.”

“Can I still go over to Monique’s tonight?”

“I said yes didn’t I?”

“I’ll be in late tonight after my shift mom. I got called in after dinner.”

Lily shook her head in acknowledgment as she ate.

“Oh, Abi, Brandon and I were thinking of going out to a movie. Do you think Jon and you can hold the fort and behave?” Lily gave me a stern look.

She actually had been keeping an eye out pretty strictly otherwise since I got here on Sunday afternoon. Though she didn’t mind Jon and I in the same bed we had to leave the bedroom door open at all times, and I was just fine with that.

The door opened and closed in the front of the house.

“That better be Jon or Brandon,” Lily called without turning.

“Jon.”

My heart fluttered hearing his voice as it always did.

“Get in here and eat.”
