Sans has been following you around for awhile, mustering the courage to finally talk to you again. He was definitely not just stalking you whenever he saw your form above the iced over water. Now you were doing your odd human thing, bending down to reach water from a formed hole in the ice and scooping it up in something transparent.
Just when you were about to do it again, Sans carefully moved so he was just under the ice formed hole and when he saw your face close enough, he sucked in enough water into his mouth. Before you could register he was facing you underwater, he sprung up and sprayed water on you. You jumped and suddenly threw the transparent object at his skull in retaliation, it bounced off of him and onto the ice, Sans howled in laughter at how adorable that stunned expression was on your stupid human face as he surfaced to be on your level of height. That small little attack you did on him did nothing though it probably wasn't an attack just a startled reaction from you.
You were beyond shocked when you saw what you thought was Sans's skull so suddenly in the water below and when he abruptly plopped his skull up from the hole and spat water in your face, you instinctively threw the glass vial you had been filling and shuffled back, now standing straight. He started to laugh loudly, rising up from the water to meet you face to face, you could now see he had fangs, not too sharp but they could definitely do some damage. You quietly scooped up some snow while he was distracted trying to calm down, if he wanted to play that game...
"I think you need to chill out a bit" You threw the snowball and you hit his skull dead on, making him yelp out in surprise. Now it was your turn to laugh at his starstruck expression, he has probably never felt snow getting thrown at his skull before plus he didn't have any goggles to protect his face from getting wet from snow. "It's not very cool to get your face wet and cold now is it, Sans?" You chuckled, he would be fine, he lived in ice cold water after all. "Er- couldn't resist the opportunity, sorry" He apologized sheepishly as he scratched his neck bone, guess it was just in his nature to take advantage. "Anyway, I got curious.... Watcha doin'?" He asked as he lowered himself a bit so he could put his elbows in a resting position on the ice and make himself less... towering. "Well I'm collecting water samples in.... this" You picked up the glass vial, now it was completely empty since you had thrown it at Sans, at least it hadn't shattered. You got closer to him and showed the vial, Sans was quite interested in it.
"Why collect water in such a tiny thing?" He inquired as he put one of his phalanges to the glass. "It's to check if the water is staying at its normal acidity and mineral levels... complex human stuff" You chuckled when you saw that Sans didn't quite get it. "It's what I do, I gather stuff so we can research it and make sure everything is as it should be" You put it in simpler terms and Sans nodded at that, seemingly understanding it better. "So you're a gatherer? The other humans are hunters then?" Ah, he didn't quite get it but he had the spirit, you didn't want to make this complicated for him. "Well actually no, we're all a team of gatherers" At that Sans looked at you confused, his pinpricks flickering as you gathered some water in the vial yet again. "Then who brings the food back to your den?" You smiled, was he concerned about you getting enough food? Your home base had multiple food storages so there was no need to hunt, also hunting around here would be near impossible. Ice fishing was an option but that was too boring for your taste. You put the vial back into its place.
"We got tons of stored food, don't worry" Sans looked skeptical but didn't voice his concern further. Speaking of home base... after that apology thing, you did check the rock Sans had given you. Turns out it wasn't just a pretty rock but a pretty gemstone. You had cracked it open in two and gotten someone to polish both parts into two beautiful blue round gems. They had asked you where you had gotten them from but you just said you found it on your route. "Oh and before I forget, here hold out your hand" You said and Sans tilted his skull slightly in confusion. "Okay? But what are you plannin'?" He did as you asked and you handed him the other half of the blue gem, shocking Sans quite a bit.
When you put that blue pretty thing in his skeletal hands, he was stunned. Why were you giving this to him? It... was such a glimmering piece of stone and it was awfully smooth to the touch. "Er- thanks? But why give this to me? S-shouldn't you hold onto this for when a m-mate comes around or s-something?" His bone cheeks were definitely turning a blue shade! Sirens usually gave pretty things like this to the person they wanted as a mate but since you were a human, you didn't know that but it was still embarrassing! He had never received such a gift ever. "A what now? No? It's the rock you gave me, I cut it in two so I decided to give you the other half of it back!" Sans blinked once, twice and then a third time. This was the apology rock!? His cheek went even darker in color, how did you... transform that rock into this beautiful thing!? You and your human tools.
"Ah uh that's really the thing I gave you? Are you sure?" You chuckled at him as you nodded, looks can be deceiving, that plain rock turned out to be a shimmering beautiful gem. "I have the other half, I don't need two of them so take it you dork" You teased but he did accept it in the end albeit a bit hesitant for some reason. You suddenly realized you might have spent a bit too much time chatting, you had work to do before it got too dark! "Ah! Gotta go... still got things to do" You gave him an apologetic smile. "Heh, alright, scamper off to do your weird human things" Sans waved you off and so you went.
Sans looked at the gem in more detail when you had left, it shimmered vibrantly of blue, it felt so smooth and ridgeless, suddenly out of nowhere, someone spoke up. "AH BROTHER! WHAT ARE YOU DOING UP HERE? DID I JUST MISS Y/N?" Papyrus had made no noise whatsoever when surfacing, he was really good in stealth despite his very long and loud stature. "Sorry Paps, they just left" Papyrus groaned, it seems he really wanted to chat with you too. "HOW UNFORTUNATE... WHAT IS THAT YOU ARE HOLDING?" Sans flinched and awkwardly scratched his blue cheek bones. "Er... Y/N gave it to me" At that, Papyrus's empty sockets widened in surprise.
"WAIT WHAT? THEY WANT TO BE YOUR MATE?" Sans could feel the embarrassment creep up his spine. "No! They're human! They don't know about Siren culture! Besides... it's the apology rock I gave them, turns out it was a gem all along..." He quickly explained and his brother blanked for a second, thinking of a response. "WELL SINCE YOU GAVE THEM THAT GEM DISGUISED AS A ROCK, DOES THAT MEAN YOU WANT TO BE THEIR MATE?" Oh my stars no! Enough with the mate thing! He didn't see you like that! Besides you were a human so the both of you weren't compatible. "I didn't know it was a gem, alright Paps? Enough with the sappy stuff" Sans dismissed his brother's skeptical look, ugh he didn't like the human in that way! They just only met! "IF YOU SAY SO SANS" His brother said before ducking back into the water.
Sans stared at the gem stone in his hands, his cheeks burning a bright blue like the thing in his hands...

Y/N gave Sans a rock back... Technically it was the same rock but my point still stands! 👀
