Patricia had been distracted by adjusting the flaps of her new gloves, alternating with admiring the texture of the fabric fitted to her arms and legs, and the leather of the red armor framed in some hardened metal that covered her. If she continued like this, she would end up memorizing every seam.
She was so excited at first with her gift, but with so much going on, she barely had time to celebrate properly. And now worry tormented her.
A gentle hand rested on her shoulder.
" It's okay, Patty, everything will be fine," Fenix told her, sweetly.
"We know you're worried" Majo approached "but whatever happened, they can fix it, and you'll see them again."
"But if you cry" said Nikki's electronic projection, fluttering in her hands "the little vampires will be sad" but then the emoji of the crying vampire turned into one throwing fire and she rolled her eyes "or worse, have genocidal results."
"That's why" Pinky wrapped her arms around her and squeezed her in an affectionate hug "we are going to keep this happy face, for the good of humanity and our necks."
"That's cruel, but true," Fenix murmured.
"Thank you" Patricia smiled at her friends' attempts to encourage her.
"Come on, Patty" Pinky shook her to the beat of a hum "I have a little song that you're going to like! Come on, let's sing together!"
"Oh, oh," Nikki jumped "let's look it up in my music library!" There was a beep, and then she seemed disappointed "Damn, I forgot that there is no Wi-Fi in this castle!"
"My, my," said Majo, sarcastic "a pity that the Lord of Shadows has not put a couple of online service modems, in a medieval castle, deadly at best, in a suspicious alternative dimension, that he himself does not understand...! A real shame!"
"Mmm" she made a thoughtful emoji "if we ask Alu-kyu, do you think he'll let me try?"
"Be careful, don't make the monsters kill each other because they don't receive a signal in their area, or they only get 2G."
"I don't think cell phones in the middle ages have such bad coverage, really," Pinky followed the comment, casually, still holding the girl, who was now giggling "but it will be a problem if the catacombs don't catch Spotify, you know, to kill soldiers with a good cumbion and such."
"Well, I'll take that risk" Nikki concluded letting out more of those beeps "whoever fears Dracula, give it to me... no, wait, it wasn't like that..."
"Hey hey" Pinky demanded "we didn't agree to monopolize creepy vampires, first notice!"
"Look who's talking, Mrs. cartoon-craving!"
"How dare you judge me, saltie-figurines!"
"Careful with the language, there are children!"
"Wait" Fenix raised a hand "if there's no connection in here, how come your holographic drone-projector keeps working?"
"Hellooooo" she said "I'm a vampire, darling, and I have my abilities! If I relied 100% on human technology, what good is my immortal blood?! Let's finish! Although I have my limitations, obviously" she murmured at the end "such as playing a music list in a timeless dimension."
"Oh, well" Fenix had her eyebrows raised "each one with their excesses, I guess..."
Patricia's snort turned into a laugh, which sounded like chimes in the macabre corridor, where they waited. Her companions smiled, satisfied.
The girl was perceptive enough to know that all that talk, without apparent context, was to distract her, to cheer her up.
That's why they continued chatting about vanities around her, while she tried to keep up with them, with partial success. Her mind went back again and again to the moment when the ghost appeared and announced the calamity:
