Wait, wait...

"Now, boy!"

At Gabriel's command, the wolf pounced on the birds pecking behind the bushes.

Minutes later, his backpack was overflowing with their dinner, while the huge pup munched on his. He had decided that it was better that Marie not witness him feeding, even if it was only the same quail that they would kill later. Not that he thought she would dislike it, just that perhaps the animal would feel as uncomfortable as he did, tearing apart a creature in front of her. Better leave it like that.

"Are you done, boy?"

He raised his head, blood still drenching his mouth.

Yeah, best to spare the maiden this.

"Take your time, but remember that they are still waiting for us."

The wolf smacked his jaws and continued with his food. Marie was not lying about his appetite, but the exercise of getting his food, where, when and which, made him more aware that he had to dose himself. Though he was pretty sure his lovely mother was still sneaking him snacks, nothing he could help, really, and nothing too serious, either.

When he was ready, the cub settled next to him, still licking his nose, as if he wanted to look presentable before going back to his lady. And oh, lord, he knew how he felt, if he lately he was washing twice as normal after every workout.

Well, it's not as if she didn't witness each and every one of his moves on campus, especially these days when they were getting harder and harder. The group he was in had also started to support simple missions where they began to gain real experience, more and more, more and more bizarre.

Down the hill with his canine companion, they easily dodged the undergrowth knowing the path by heart. He was contemplating the landscape absently, with the orange hues of the sunset hovering over them. Marie loved that view. And he loved watching her watch it.

Another quiet day, his muscles burning from all the physical exertion of the day, but with all his bad temper buried in the ground, he felt as if were floating, as if nothing in the world could disturb his temper.

"Gabriel!"

Marie and her sisters were waiting for them at the foot of the mountain and he smiled widely at her gesture.

"How about a race, boy?"

The wolf snorted and hurried past him down the hill. Being a wild animal, it could be said that he had an advantage over him, but that was one of those challenges that would never tire him. Besides, he had his own tricks.

Nevertheless, though he leaned on his whip and slid with his boots over the grass, the cub bounded up to the base of the hill moments before he did, and began to flutter joyfully around Marie:

"Ponvi!" She did cartwheels trying to keep up with him and ended up bending down to hug him and rub his fur "You've been good, haven't you?"

Gabriel approached smiling and scratched the boy's ears.

"He is getting better every day. I still don't know why I have to accompany him."

"Because there's no way I'm going to leave him alone in the forest."

The young warrior rolled his eyes instead of giving her the usual "he's a wolf and he has to do it on his own, blah blah blah."

"The fire is ready!" Tomas's face was black with soot and José threw a blanket at him.

"Don't go like that at night or we'll mistake you for a monster and we won't have mercy."

"Very funny," he muttered, cleaning himself.
