Carefully they reached the exit of the tunnel. Gabriel made sure the coast was clear before slipping outside. He then extended his hands towards his maid to help her out. Her trembling had subsided but the feminine face refused to regain color.
"Do you feel better?" He asked anyway, brushing the unruly strands of her hair back.
Her forehead was still soaked with sweat, so he had to carefully peel them off.
She just nodded. He was more than sure that she was still ashamed of her behavior, but now was not the time to tell her how brave he considered her and he wouldn't know how to explain it to her either.
He kissed her forehead once it was clear and held her close to him as they moved towards the exit towards the forest. There perhaps they would find some shelter, and they could consider how to get their sisters to safety or perhaps contact their brothers. He knew that those bastards were stubborn enough to let themselves be killed by those spirits.
Behind the arch of worn rock, the gloom of the cloudy sky greeted them, so they had to be guided by the flashes of distant fire, which shone from the battlefield.
"Where... where are we going?" she finally gasped.
"We will have more opportunity out here than in that labyrinth. Don't worry, I know the surroundings. You must recover first."
"I... I don't think I can..."
"We'll see when we reach our destination," he had to laugh despite himself.
"Ponvi... he..."
"He's probably hidden here somewhere. He also knows these parts and is too smart to get caught."
Finally, they reached the path that he knew well by heart, and Marie looked up, the light returning to her face.
"This place is..."
"You recognize it, right? It's been a while since we came here, but nothing has changed."
Further ahead, he parted the tall ferns, revealing the flow of the river, whose echo they had already felt from afar, but from this point, it was already clear as water bathed in the faint light of the moon.
He knew that his maid had been invaded by the same nostalgia as him, and although she tried to contain them, more tears rolled down her cheeks. He gently rubbed her back and smiled at her:
"Come on, let's wash your face."
She looked away ashamed:
"I can't stand this becoming habitual," she said, squeezing her lips in frustration.
"Oh, believe me, it's less common than it seems, my dear."
The cold water splashing on her cheeks restored some of her blush and eventually she stopped sniveling.
At some point a white halo reached them, and they looked up, the clouds were clearing to show the face of the full moon. Whatever it meant, it left them speechless for a long moment.
A growl came from behind them. They both turned and Gabriel drew his holster, covering her with his body. As the enormous clawed legs landed on the grass, the winged beast hissed at them, baring its fangs in a macabre laugh, trickles of blood spilling from its jaw and soaking its exposed chest. The young warrior recognized it because its face had not finished regenerating from the lashes that he had given it before.
"I see" his sarcastic laugh emerged "so you've come for revenge." He pressed the trembling young woman against him and made her riding crop jump "that's just fine, come here, if you dare."
"Gabriel..." she gasped.
"Look carefully, Marie" he growled under his breath "this is the value you should give to these monstrosities. You can cover your eyes if you want, but let's get this one over with, right now."
The beast roared and charged at them. Gabriel's laughter deepened as the leather drop flew to crash into the creature's pale flesh. Screams of pain filled that clearing and blood stained the green grass.
"I dare you to get close to her, if you dare, beast!" His roar was competing with that of the vampire, who kept receiving repeated rejections with him every time he decided to advance.
The thing raised its wings and lunged at them from above.
"Gabriel!"
He crouched down with his gauntlet raised to cover them both but a white flash came out of the shadows. The wolf's teeth sank into one of his wings, and as it fell under his own weight, he tore it completely. Streams of blood rained down amidst the monster's cries. The wolf had landed near them and was viciously taking it out on the piece of wing it was still chewing on, until he spat it out. Red soaked his jaw as he decided to spit it out.
"Ponvi!" Marie exclaimed.
"Well done, boy, just in time!" Gabriel raised the whip again and placed the girl behind him "Now, let's finish this one!"
They had positioned themselves on both sides of her, while the creature was recovering, as if they had rehearsed it.
The wolf's eyes shone liquid gold, as did his sharp teeth, now bloody.
The vampire raised his remaining wing and returned through the rematch. The wolf jumped onto his paw as Gabriel tore at his chest again and again.
The blood continued to splash.
Blooooodyyyy~~~ My babies are so badass!!!
Peace~
