Marie wanted to cover her eyes, just as her hair had suggested, but she couldn't stop looking. The fierceness of the two beings she loved most in this world was overwhelming her. Ponvi's side was suddenly hit by his claws, while Gabriel's armor did an excellent job of protecting him, yet nothing seemed to affect them.
And what could she do? Look? Cry?
But her face was already dry and she seemed to stay that way.
She took a step back, two, the river continuing its course right behind her. Her eyes rose to the sky and a plea came from her soul.
What can I do?
"Marie!"
As she returned to the front, the creature was looming over her. The echo of her memories took place in the present.
He was hovering over her... he was going to catch her... he would be between her fangs shortly...
A shadow?
She remembered that silhouette. He had caught a glimpse of her every time his vision was about to reach the end of her. A huge, dark figure. Her eyes stared at her like red dots, letting her glare partially show her face.
Who...? What...?
Something began to emerge from deep within her chest, a kind of light... Pan's necklace was suddenly burning the base of her neck, from where she had never moved.
All notion of her body had disappeared. She was floating inertly in absolute calm.
That glow delimited the space between her and the shadow that still contemplated her, although not even this could give clarity to the details of the stranger.
She wasn't scared anymore.
I... I know you... She told the being, without moving her lips. You were there that night.
She didn't know how, but she was sure she had surprised him. And she also had to raise her eyebrows when, unexpectedly and in a deep voice, she responded:
You can see me.
Not...really... she admitted.
And listen to me, apparently.
Who are you?
The real source of your nightmares, it seems. His words, although cruel, sparked a grim amusement.
If so, why am I not afraid?
You're not?
No, not anymore.
There was a moment of silence.
I see. It must be because your strength opposes mine.
Opposes? It doesn't feel like it.
No?
It's more like...
The world contracted and faltered.
Am I going to die? Her mental voice came out too dispassionate.
The being took its time responding. When he did, his sadness overwhelmed her.
Not yet, little Marie, not tonight. That brat bastard is too stubborn to allow it and he's going to stay by your side for as long as he's allowed.
She had to pout.
I don't know who you are, but don't talk about Gabriel like that.
She could have sworn the stranger backed away just before he burst out laughing.
It's not funny! She complained to him.
Whatever you say, little one, you will always be right, my dear.
My dear?
Take care of that braggart and your beloved wolf. They need you in ways you will never understand.
She had just noticed the familiarity of his way of speaking, despite his grave tone, when everything began to fade.
Wait! Who are you?
Blinking, the dark mist of the being had contracted into a more familiar silhouette.
Gabriel was soaked in blood. He was still holding the bloody piece of wood he had stabbed into the vampire's chest, and the creature's fangs were still embedded in the leather of his gauntlet.
Marie saw him throw the inert body to the ground, where a flame began to consume it.
She was collapsed on the floor when he turned to examine her.
"Marie!" He held her in his arms, his face pale covered in red spots "are you okay?"
A worried Ponvi joined them and she continued to be perplexed.
"What...happened?"
The young man pursed his lips, perhaps considering how to respond. Instead, he lifted her into his arms:
"We must go."
He started running before she could say anything, with the wolf easily keeping up with him.
"G-Gabriel..."
A dejavu invaded her, as if that vision threatened to return, that shadow carrying her in the same way.
Only that the face she saw through the mist... was Gabriel's.
