So that's how things would be.
Surrounded by his brothers, Marie's sisters, she at her side and the wolf on her lap, laid but alert, the group had made a circle at the back of the compound and had been talking for hours.
It was so foreign to him, and he would be uncomfortable if it weren't for his maiden's hand, which he hadn't let go of all this time, or had she been the one who refused to let go? He had no way of knowing. Maybe she noticed how she was feeling, or she felt the same way.
Still, everything they had exchanged was getting harder to hear the more theories were formed.
And she was the target.
Gabriel had had to swallow his bad mood so as not to bother her more than she was and dedicate himself to listening with that ball of anger stuck in his chest.
Deep breath. Exhale. Repeat. Diet and training, he looked at the wolf sideways, it was what he needed to be worthy of continuing to hold that soft and warm hand.
He no longer even cared about the occasional glances from those present, if that connection kept him sober, there was nothing anyone could do to avoid it.
Although holding her and protecting her was what he really wanted, she had asked him to trust her, and he, with every second, trusted her strength more. Not physical perhaps, but his soul.
And how much he loved her for it.
That's right, the first time that thought had slipped into his mind, straight from his heart, it had been so natural that he hadn't even noticed it at the time. And the more he repeated it in his head, the more he became aware of its presence, of how real it was, and of course, of all that it entailed.
To say it out loud would be damning himself, and probably dragging her into the torment assigned to him.
Would she agree?
Well, from the way their hands held each other, and the explicit and somewhat shy way in which she reciprocated...
No, Gabriel, you didn't dream it.
Another vivid memory for the list of those who would haunt him for eternity.
It was fine if she didn't reject him, right? It was okay if she wanted him as much as he wanted her, wasn't it? Will there be any redemption for him if something like this happened?
The Great Dracula could already laugh at such naivety in some distant future.
But for now, the connection between the two of them was enough to sober him from the revelations of their comrades, and he was sure it was helping her to remain steadfast as well. That was all he needed to know.
Therefore, when he finished listening to his companions, he snorted:
"I see, so we really were deceived. And whoever it is has claimed a scapegoat to be able to continue retracing here, untouchable."
"And I'm its target... but, why...? Marie gasped, to which he squeezed her hand in response to calm her down."
"We cannot stop to think about that without being fully sure."
"For now," Julia said, "I suggest we investigate, everything that any of us can have access to since I still think it's one of the maidens."
"I'll help you," Marie declared.
"I help, I help!" Anisa jumped.
"If she had access to the records of the maidens," said José "now she will have expanded to the knowledge of the apprentices, since the campuses have been unified, let's do the same then."
"And it would be ideal for one of us to escort you, at least discreetly" suggested Tomas.
"Then I...!" Manuel was going to jump but Tomas silenced him with a slap.
"Gabriel is the stealthiest, although we can take turns to cover each other, lest they suspect."
"Sister Lucrecia is supporting us, she was the one who allowed us to meet" Julia clarified.
The young warrior remained thoughtful:
"We should also review the ruins of the destroyed complex, there is something about that place that continues bothering me."
"That place?" Marie whispered.
"We can do that during the next break" José made a move to stand up 'for now, we must return before they notice our absence."
"Go back now?" Manuel complained.
"Don't argue" Tomás nudged him and turned to Gabriel "Do you feel good to start now, brother?"
"Yes," he answered without hesitation.
"In that case" Julia took Anise by the hand "we go ahead. We will find a way to communicate. Come on, little sister."
"Ah... okay... See you, hero!"
Gabriel raised his hand in farewell, before realizing what he was doing, with Marie's soft laughter beside him.
"What is it?" He asked her.
I think we've all missed you.
He gazed at her, finally alone again... except for the wolf. He took advantage of the fact that they both refused to let go to attract her to him:
"Are you ready?"
Her blush was his reward, but she did not back down:
"I am."
He used his free hand to gently cup her cheek, his lips turned up in a confident smile.
"I'm not going to let you go again."
"You better" she returned that sweet expression "because I'm not going to do it either."
He finished closing the distance to lean in and catch her lips, ignoring the cub's confused look.
