Coffee

The night air was cool and the street was mostly deserted - well before he bumped into her out of nowhere. Jiyeon was deep in muddled thought and was startled when they collided but recovered quickly. She bent to pick up her things that scattered everywhere and suddenly their eyes met. She looked into the most beautiful, dark brown eyes like a puppy's, framed in long lashes, and very clear yet mysterious, except she saw a hint of sadness there that was not unlike her own, but she shoved the thought away and tried to show a stoic face.

"Sorry" she said automatically. She sighed inwardly because it seemed that all she did these days was apologize - for everything. She gathered all her things and stood up. He asked, "You play?" She looked at him and thought 'Well, I most probably play the guitar since I'm carrying it' - but all she said was "yeah, sure. Thanks - bye." She walked away and thought to pay attention to where she was going this time. Conversing with people is hard enough - add in stupid questions and what do we get, she thought.

After a few blocks, she went into a small café which was packed and sat in a corner. "Hi Jiyeon, the usual?" asked Mrs. Kim. "Yes please - thanks Mrs. Kim," she replied. She took out her guitar and prepared for her gig. As she finished setting up - she looked for her favorite guitar pick - which she always hid in her wallet - the wallet that Seunggi gave her - on that day so many years ago. She looked inside her pockets, her guitar case, her bag even - but it wasn't anywhere. "Five minutes Jiyeon," Mr. Kim announced. "Okay, I'll be right out," she decided that she might have left her wallet at home and used another pick instead.

She sighed, closed her eyes and started to play the first chords of the song then Sunmi started singing. The crowd applauded them and Sunmi smiled her brightest and looked at her and Minho as the cue for their next song. They played 2 sets and the crowd asked for an encore. They obliged but inwardly, Jiyeon wanted to race back home and look for her wallet. She had a bad feeling since bumping into that boy on the street but dismissed it quickly as a show of nerves before each gig but somehow the doubt kept niggling at the back of her mind because she doesn't get upset easily.

Finally, after many goodbyes and a lot of appreciative words from the café's owners; Mr. and Mrs. Kim, she gathered her stuff and said a hurried goodbye to Sunmi and Minho. "Are you okay?" shouted Sunmi at her fading back. "Yeah - sure," she waved at them. The 35-minute bus ride home didn't help her anxious state. She deposited her guitar and other stuff on the floor and headed straight towards her bedside table.

The wallet wasn't there.
