Chapter 21 What could it be?

           Jiyeon froze in her seat and her face became really pale. All the happy memories this morning faded away and were replaced by anxiety. She hated feeling this way - as if she was always ready for a fight with her mom. She was worried because she didn't know why her mom was here, she just usually 'allows me to run amok' (her words not mine) Jiyeon thought. 

             "Good morning Jiyeon!" Taehee said. "Good morning mom" she replied. Manners drilled into her since birth became apparent when she stood up quickly, although belatedly; to acknowledge her mom. She went around the table to give her a kiss on the cheek. "Mr. And Mrs. Kim, this is my mother, Lee Taehee" she said by way of introduction. 

                 The couple stood as well and they acknowledged Taehee with kind smiles. "Mom, this is the elderly couple who own the Sounds Cafe - where I play with Sunmi and Minho" she continued. "And this is my friend, Jungkook - he helped me last evening while I- he helped me a lot" she finished lamely while gesturing at Jungkook. He had a wide-eyed look and seemed confused about what to say but good manners made him stand up and bow low to Taehee. 

                  "Uh - uhm - hello - Good morning Madam Lee!" he stammered really badly. Taehee looked at her daughter and noticed that she was wearing an oversize t-shirt and some pj's. Her face didn't change but she said, "Jiyeon, I need to talk you..." Jiyeon winced and tried to talk back but Mrs. Kim saved her by saying, "Madam Lee, would it be okay if you let Jiyeon finish breakfast first?" Taehee seemed abashed and said, "Oh - of course - I'm sorry - yes, please go ahead and eat Jiyeon - everyone!" she replied. Mrs. Kim showed her into the living room so that she can sit while waiting for Jiyeon, while Mr. Kim excused himself to go water the plants.

                    Jiyeon sighed deeply and sat back down but didn't resume eating. "Hey - what's wrong?" Jungkook punched her playfully on her shoulder. She sighed again and said "Arrrrrgh - I'm not ready for whatever it is that she wants to talk to me about" Jungkook glanced sideways at her and said, "Well - I learned that instead of talking back, why don't you listen first and decide if you can reach a compromise?"

                Jiyeon's eyes went wide with surprise at his advice. She even raised her eyebrows at him teasingly. He laughed at her and said, "What? I just learned that it's never good to argue with your mom" he said somewhat wistfully and turned serious. She looked at him and asked, "When did you last see your mom?" He shrugged and looked away. "You're right - I don't like feeling this way towards my mom actually - so I'll go and try to listen to what she has to say," Jiyeon said. 

                She stood up to leave. When she reached the door, she looked over her shoulder to say, "Hey - thanks for everything!" and smiled. Jungkook waved his hand at her as she disappeared into the living room.

                  Jiyeon braced herself for whatever it was that her mom wanted to talk about. She took Jungkook's advice to heart and hoped that her mom wouldn't do or say anything earth-shattering. Somehow, she had a really bad feeling about this - 'why did mom come to get me?' she thought. "Mom" she called out. "Jiyeon, come sit down" Taehee said. She sat on the other end of the couch and looked at her mom. "We need to go to Japan - right away - I've already asked Sebastian to pack your bags" Taehee said.

Jiyeon couldn't help it. "Whaaaaat?" she yelled. 'This couldn't be happening!' she thought.
