Ch. 10 What's wrong?

Jiyeon was out the door before Taehee could stop her. Minwoo shouted, "Jiyeon!" as she was almost run over by a black van. He started to get out of the car to chase after his daughter when Taehee said, "It's dangerous Minwoo, and besides, the lights just turned green – let's just go home and wait for her there" she pleaded. "Tch" muttered Minwoo and tried not to punch the car wall.

Jiyeon ran blindly into the blockade of cars and never noticed the black van that was coming straight at her. The van stopped in time but she never knew her near brush with death. Belatedly she looked back at the van and was startled that almost all of the cars were now moving – so she hurried across to safety. Luckily, the other side of the street was empty so she ran over quickly and hit the sidewalk and tried to get lost in the crowd. She walked aimlessly and replayed the events that led to her reckless escape. "So have you decided what to do for college?" Minwoo asked. "Yes – I want to do music" she tried to say courageously but it sounded defiant. Taehee smiled at her benignly and patted her hand encouragingly but Minwoo just looked away and sighed disappointingly. "Honey-" Taehee started to say.

Suddenly, Jiyeon just couldn't take it anymore – she would've preferred him to shout or throw things and be mad – not disappointed. All those years of wishing and dreaming and yearning; coupled with resentment and anger – finally burst out of her, so instead of letting them see her tears, she thoughtlessly opened the car door and ran out.

She drifted back to reality because she was cold and then remembered that she left her coat in the car. She stopped by a park bench and sat down. She thought, after all these years, I've never been riled up like this. Why does he have to hate it so much?  She drew up her knees to hide her face and stayed that way for some time when a violent shake jolted her out of her musings. "Hey are you ok-" "What the he-" she started to say but stopped short when she felt warmed by a jacket that was quickly draped over her shoulders. She jerked involuntarily when she realized that their faces were so close and he also seemed surprised by what he was doing so they ended up staring at each other – again.

As she stared into those eyes – her mouth dropped open in recognition and she quickly closed it and looked away. "Ah – thanks for the – uh – jacket" she stammered. What's wrong with me, she wondered,  'I can't possibly be flustered by this boy'... He also recovered and dropped his hands and stood up slowly. "Ah – it's no problem, are you warm enough now?" he asked. "Ah yeah–thanks, I- do you like coffee?" she blurted suddenly.

He smiled a killer one that reached his eyes and she froze for a moment. "Sure!" he said. She couldn't resist smiling back though it was a reserved one; so she stood up, still clutching his jacket and said, "I know a place."
