Worst Timing
Jiyeon decided to just go home and post an ad in the papers tomorrow - well, good luck with that; but she couldn't think of other ideas anymore. The thought of another 35-minute ride made her sick so she went to the café and called Sunmi. "Hey, where are you?" Sunmi asked her. "I'm back at the café, can I sleep over?" Jiyeon asked. "Uh - sure, I'll pick you up" Sunmi said.
"Hey, what happened?" Sunmi asked right after she barged through the café doors. "I'm fine - I lost Seunggi's wallet earlier. Let's go home - I'll just continue looking for it tomorrow" she said tiredly.
They arrived at around 2 a.m. and she just crashed onto Sunmi's bed and slept till noon. Jiyeon woke up to her ringing phone. She answered and mumbled a few yeahs and stood up. "Hey Sunmi, I gotta go - I'll call you later okay? Thanks for letting me sleep over," she said as she closed the door behind her. She walked slowly to the elevator and got out just as slowly. A black SUV was waiting for her outside Sunmi's apartment; she got into it slowly; without a word.
"Please take me home first Sebastian, thanks," she mumbled as quietly as possible but the driver just nodded.
"Jiyeon, why didn't you tell me you were sleeping at Sunmi's? You had me worried," Taehee said gently.
Jiyeon's mom Taehee is a classic example of a woman who became more beautiful as she aged. Her oval face was still free of wrinkles, and at 42, she still looks ten years younger. Jiyeon sighed. "I'm sorry mom," she replied automatically. She flinched inwardly at her response. This time, her mom sighed. "I know this must be difficult for you, but the party was already planned weeks before - and you gave your word," she emphasized that but gently.
"Fine - but don't make me go in those monstrosities you call dresses," she replied.
'My mom has a way of annoying me and I act out, just like a kid all over again' she thought. She trudged sadly up to her room and tried not to cry over her lost wallet. But first things first - "Hey Sunmi, please tell Mr. Kim for me - I can't make it to tonight's gig - I forgot that I have to go to this party; anyway I'll make it up to you. See you tomorrow," she called Sunmi.
The black, a-line cocktail dress was the only one she found less offensive, so she put it on and wore her oldest pair of chucks. A knock on her door signaled that she was summoned by mom downstairs. She walked down the stairs and glared at her mom - challenging her to comment about her shoes, but her mom just sighed and got into the car.
In the car, she asked "When can we go home?" Taehee fought the urge to roll her eyes at her daughter. "We will go home as soon as Dad arrives," she replied.
Jiyeon's breath caught - Dad. Dad is coming home.
