SEN

The demigods made it to the edge of the town before the first two skeleton warriors appeared. They stepped from the trees on either side of the road. Instead of gray camouflage, they were now wearing blue New Mexico State Police uniforms, but they had the same transparent gray skin and yellow eyes.

They drew their handguns.

Thalia tapped her bracelet. Aegis spiraled to life on her arm, but the warriors didn't flinch. Their glowing yellow eyes bored right into Percy. He drew Riptide, though Sen wasn't sure what good it would do against guns.

Zoe and Bianca drew their bows, standing in front of Sen, who was holding a semi-conscious Grover in her arm. Just ten minutes ago, she was holding him and dancing around while singing a sea shanty. Now, she kind of wished that was the reason she was holding him.

"Back up." Thalia said.

Everyone started to- but then Sen heard a rustling of branches. Two more skeletons appeared on the road behind them. They were surrounded.

Sen wondered where the other skeletons were. She and Percy had seen a dozen at the Smithsonian. Then one of the warriors raised a cell phone to his mouth and spoke into it.

Except he wasn't speaking. He made a clattering, clicking sound, like dry teeth on bone. Suddenly, Sen understood what was going on. The skeletons had split up to look for the demigods. These skeletons were now calling their brethren. Soon, there would be a full party.

Please, She prayed to the force she felt before. Please hurry. I know you're near.

"It's near." Grover moaned.

"Uh, it's here." Percy said.

"No." Grover insisted. "The gift. The gift from the Wild."

Sen didn't know about that. The soul nearby was definitely not a friend- it was straight-up feral. But, it reminded her a little bit of Clarisse, and Clarisse could be helpful sometimes, so she kept praying.

"We'll have to go one-on-one." Thalia said. "Four of them. Four of us. Maybe they'll ignore Grover that way."

"What about me?" Sen complained.

Thalia stared at her. "You're out. You're holding Grover since he can't walk."

"I'll dump him in a dumpster! I wanna fight!"

"Thanks." Grover muttered.

"Just go hide." Thalia barked.

"Agreed." Zoe nodded.

"The Wild!" Grover moaned.

A warm wind blew through the canyon, rustling the trees. It reminded Sen of last summer, that day when Percy won the chariot race and accepted Tyson as his brother. She remembered how the wind had felt when she kissed Percy's cheek.

Why was she thinking about that?

Sen broke away from her thoughts when Percy charged.
