A/N: Hello gorgeous reader, I hope you're having a good day! It's sunny here, so my day is going better than I expected. I managed to write this between rehearsals, work and building Ikea furniture for my new place, so forgive me if it's a little short! FYI, this chapter has a few mentions of blood, gun violence, wounds and cuts, so if any of that triggers you, please proceed with caution!

I am very excited to get them moving and start a new chapter in a new place! I have some very fun ideas for what's to come (mostly involving very cliche and absolutely adorable tropes) so hopefully I'll be able to publish quite regularly in the following weeks!

As always, I hope you enjoy and let me know what you think! x

"Mom what happens when a wound heals?

"Natalia, Russian."

"Прости, мама. Что происходит, когда рана... когда рана..."

Sorry, mama. What happens when the wound... when the wound...

She frowned, unsure of the correct words to use, but Sofia understood what her daughter meant.

"Когда заживает?"

When it heals?

"Да. Исцеляет."

Yes. Heals.

"Это становится шрамом"

It becomes a scar.

"Шрам?"

A scar?

"Да."

Natalie thought about that new word and played with the letters in her brain.

"But мама, how does a wound become a scar?"

Natalie frowned at the reddened skin on her finger, tapping lightly on the open flesh. It was only a small cut but she could see where the skin had broken, blood coming out.

"Русский, любовь моя. На русском."

Russian, my love. In Russian.

Natalie groaned and let her head fall on the table in front of her. Sofia scolded her, instructing her to sit up straight as she was working on her hair.

"Как раны становятся шрамами?"

Sofia smiled sweetly and kept braiding Natalie's hair as she gave her answer.

"When the skin is wounded, it breaks, which causes a protein called collagen to be released. Collagen works like a sort of glue. This glue builds up where the skin is damaged, helping to heal and strengthen the wound. New glue continues to form for several months, and it builds up on the wound, like a cake with many layers. That's why the skin when it's scarred is raised and lumpy. It shows that your skin there has become stronger because of the wound."
