Come on. There were only five candidates, excluding me, competing to be part of the debate trio. Four of them were the second year students, two of which were maverick in debates. The other two... nerdy morons with limited experience. It seems that only one place left for the freshmen, me and Aruna, and the place for me was at stake.
Was it? She's surely smart. Damn smart. But not that kind of "street smart" like me. As soon as the selection commenced, I could feel her nervousness. Was she afraid of losing? Oh, I bet she was and she was supposedly so.
The topics given by the host, whose name I didn't remember, were my field of expertise. Global warming. Human trafficking. International free trade. I believed my performance and arguments could impress the panelists. Look at their way of staring at me. The four senior competitors were also speechless, like seeing a girl who was destined to be a winner. Come on. The lecturers were wasting their time holding the selection. And that was the very moment when I saw something striking. There, among the audience, the lecturers and students were circling something. Or someone. What was that? I decided to stand up and approached them all. Only to find out an astonishing fact. Or an exciting one.
Aruna fainted during the break. What a surprise.
