Chapter 6

"T-this is too much, Shann. It is too─"

"Don't mind it, Star," I shook my head with a smile. "Para sa'yo yan. Please accept it." Nag-puppy eyes pa ako kahit hindi ko hilig iyon gawin. Star gave me a certain look of doubt and I smiled some more just to convince her. Pagpapa-cute na itong ginagawa ko, eh, pero if it's for her then I don't mind. "Please?"

She heaved a deep sigh. Dahan-dahan niyang ibinaba sa table ang phone na ibinigay ko. She looked at me and smiled shyly. "S-salamat."

I smiled back and shrugged my shoulders. Takte, kinikilig ako. Kalma ka lang, Shann, magiging obvious ka. "Welcome."

Hindi na maalis sa labi niya ang ngiti habang nakatingin sa akin. Dang! Pakiramdam ko, matutunaw ako kapag hindi pa siya tumigil sa ginagawa. She really looked radiant right now, she's so pretty.

God, I'm so in love with her.

I wonder if she can love me back someday. I bet I'll be the happiest being alive if that happens. Pero saka ko na siguro iisipin iyon. Sa ngayon, kailangan ko muna maging isang mabuting kaibigan─a friend who will help her to overcome her fears, a friend who will always be there for her no matter what happens. That's the best thing I can offer as of now. At least, in that way, I will still be able to let her feel my affection, kahit hindi man siya aware.

"Gusto mo turuan kitang gumamit ng phone?" I asked. It's her first time to have a phone kaya nagsu-suggest na akong turuan siya.

She shook her head and smiled lightly. "Is it okay kung ako ang matuto ng sa sarili ko lang?"

Napangiti ako sa tanong niya. I expected that from her. She's really independent in her own way. "Oh, sige. Naka-save na yung number ko riyan." I informed. "Kapag wala ako at may kailangan ka, I'm just one call away, okay?"

She nodded. Sinimulan na niyang kalikutin ang phone niya. I'm glad that I made her happy kahit sa simpleng way lang. Humiga siya sa bed at mukhang nagkakaroon na ng sariling mundo. Naglalaro siguro siya ng games. She looked like a kid. It's super cute.

Dahil gusto ko pang mag-stay dito sa room para makasama si Star ay tumingin-tingin na lang muna ako ng mga books na magandang basahin. Parang school library naman itong kwarto niya, kumpleto sa mga academic books, may pang-highschool at college pa. Hindi na ako magtataka kung sobrang talino niya.

I'm starting to feel bad for her childhood days. Malungkot siguro na wala kang makalaro at makausap bukod sa ina mo. Ngayong nandito na ako sa tabi niya, I'm going to make sure that she'll be the happiest girl living on Earth.

Sa pagtingin-tingin ko, nakakita na rin ako ng libro na mukhang magandang basahin. I read the title─The First Phone Call From Heaven. Sounds intriguing and interesting. I read the synopsis of the book.

One morning in the small town of Coldwater, Michigan, the phones start ringing. The voices say they are calling from heaven. Is it the greatest miracle ever? Or some cruel hoax? As news of this strange calls spreads, outsiders flock to Coldwater to be a part of it.

Uupo na sana ako sa table nang mapansin kong nakatitig sa akin si Star. Nginitian ko siya kaagad. "May kailangan ka?"

She nodded. She sat on the bed and moved herself on the left side. "Dito ka magbasa...sa tabi ko."

My heart skipped a beat and I felt myself blushing─I know because I can really feel my cheeks burning down to my neck. Hindi ako—hindi ako—fine. Kinikilig ako. How can she do that?

"O-okay," I managed to reply despite the stuttering. May igaganda pa ba ang araw na ito? Masyado na akong masaya sa mga nangyayari. Baka mamaya, mag-hyperventilate na ako. Umupo na ako sa tabi ni Star habang pinapanatili pa rin ang distansya ko. I don't want to make her uncomfortable.
