EMMA

"Yeah, I'm on my way now, I'm nearly home," I told Hollis through the phone, walking slowly through the dark streets.

"Alright, we're waiting for you. The movie is loaded, the popcorn is warm and Ajay has actually said more than two words today," Hollis chirped happily. "I have never been happier to be out of my own house."

"How much longer is Sean going to stay?" I mused, taking a short cut down an alleyway between two restaurants.

"I don't know, a few days? Weeks? God forbid, years," Hollis griped before sighing, "all I know is that as long as he stays, none of us are gonna have a good time."

I shook my head lightly, fighting off the smile growing on my face, "Just forget about him for tonight. We'll watch Star Wars and—"

"Oh, no, babes, Star Wars is out," Hollis cut me off, "Harry Potter is in. Ajay was very adamant about that."

I snorted, "Roger that—oh, hey, do you want me to pick up some of those—"

Something clattered and I whipped around, eyeing my surroundings; a gate in the alleyway had swung closed, banging against the metal fence attached to it.

"Em?" Hollis called over the phone, "All okay on your end?"

I let out a shudder, shaking my head quickly, "Yeah, it was just the wind." I started walking again, speeding up a little, "Anyway, I can bring back some of those mini donuts the boys love, the ones with the um... the sugar stuff on it."

"Sprinkle donuts?" Hollis asked, her amusement obvious, "No, it's okay, Hank already got them cotton candy today and I'd like them to keep at least three teeth by the time they're sixteen."

"Noted," I laughed with her, exiting the alleyway into another street, the lights dim and the shops closed.

"Just get back here, Caden's about three punches away from knocking your TV over," Hollis warned me, "and I won't lie, I don't think I can stop him."

I went to reply but a beep on my phone made me pull it away from me. I had an incoming call from an unknown number.

"Hello? Emma?"

I frowned, clicking on the call before declining it, "Yeah, no, sorry, it was just some random—"

Something hard hit the back of my head and the phone slipped out of my hand before I fell forward and hit the ground.

My head grew tired and I felt something wet go down my neck, my eyes blinking slowly as someone's shoes partially came into my line of sight.

"Emma? Emma, can you hear me? Emma! Dad, call the police! Em—" The line of my phone went dead, killing Hollis's voice with it.

Then someone grabbed my legs and started to drag me along with them. My eyes only had a chance to look up at the fading lights of the lamp posts above me, the yellow blinking on and off, the buzz weirdly loud in my ears.

Then, everything went black.
