EMMA

"Ajay, let's move!" I yelled out, leaning against the doorframe of Hollis's house.

"You were late yesterday, I'm late today! It's Karma!" Ajay yelled back from inside the house,

"Oh, I'll show you Karma!" Hollis snapped loudly, coming to the door with Ajay's school bag, "If I have to take another call from your damned homeroom teacher, you're gonna meet Karma face to face."

"I'm here, I'm here," Ajay rushed past her, grabbing his school bag from her hands, "I was finishing my homework."

"Finishing it?" Hollis crossed her arms over her chest, clearly unimpressed by him, "You mean collecting it, right?"

"Of course he does, now let's go," I guided Ajay away by his shoulders, throwing Caden a kiss as he waved at us from behind his mother's legs.

"Have a good day at school, don't get into trouble!" Hollis waved us away before closing the door.

"She's grouchy today cause dad stopped by last night," Ajay told me the second Hollis was out of earshot.

"Oh?" I looked down at him in amusement, opening the passenger door for him to climb in.

"Yeah, he brought sage."

"What?" I leaned over to buckle him in before closing the door, hurrying over to the other side so I wouldn't be late again.

"Yeah, he said the house had bad energy and sage is cleansing," Ajay grinned, adjusting the seat to go higher as the car started.

"And what did your momma say?" I smirked slightly, pulling out of Hollis's street.

"She told him to take his sage and go to hell," He concluded happily, holding onto his school bag as the wind whipped past his face.

I snorted, raising my hand to ruffle his hair, "That why you didn't finish your homework?"

"No, that was cause it's English and I hate Shakespeare," Ajay shrugged, "Mr Hooper is a shit teacher."

I let out a dramatic gasp, glancing at him quickly before grabbing my chest, "Ajay Hank Simmons, did you just cuss in my car?"

Ajay let out a soft giggle, beaming up at me, "I won't tell if you won't."

"Oh," my eyes widened in amusement, "oh, it's like that! Who taught you that, huh?"

"You did!" Ajay exclaimed in delight as I turned onto another street, pulling up across from his school. "It was your catchphrase every time something broke in the house."

I leaned over to pinch his cheek, unclipping his belt, "Well, I guess the rule stands then, my bad. Just don't cuss in front of your momma."

"I know that already," Ajay nodded quickly, opening the car door and stepping out before hitching his bag onto his shoulder, "that's why you're the cool one."

"Don't try sweet talk me," I wagged my finger in his face, "let's go, I want to make sure you get in alright."

"I'm not five! I can go in by myself," Ajay protested but he still let me walk with him to the other side of the road.
