*Two days later*
Esme's POV
I stepped out of my room at the same time as Karai, glancing up at her and giving her a small smile and a wave. She looked away without so much as a nod and began to walk towards the throne room, where Shredder was waiting for us.
I sighed as I started to follow her. Father had called for us, but that's all we knew about the meeting. I walked in after Karai and took my place next to her, both of us bowing our heads.
"Esme, because of your training you have rarely been on actual patrolling missions. Tonight I will have both of you out on patrol for the turtles. In order to lead you need to be well-rounded, and this is part of that process," Shredder's voice was as calm and collected as it always was.
"But master...." Karai began, a surprised look on her face. She was no doubt upset that I would be accompanying her, especially on a task she normally coordinated herself.
"Enough Karai," he snapped, the air seeming to become ten degrees colder. Karai immediately silenced herself and bowed her head deeper than before.
"You will not question my direct orders. Now go, you need to get ready. The sun has almost set."
We uttered a quick, "Yes sir," and filed out of the throne room, heading back to our own rooms. However, before we got there Karai stopped in front of me and whirled around, anger etched into her features.
"Listen up," she started, "I know the turtles and their routine better than anyone here, so I'll be taking the lead. You've never actually been on one of these patrols so all you'll do is slow me down. Stay close to our group and don't get in my way. Got it?"
"Got it," I murmured, dropping my gaze to the ground. She turned around and stormed into her room, satisfied with my response. All that I felt however was a knot in my stomach and the urge to cry. I hated this. My hands clenched into fists as I took a deep breath to calm myself before heading into my own room to get ready.
Raph's POV
"What the hell are you guys doing?" I questioned, staring blankly at the scene in front of me. April, Donnie, and Mikey were standing around the kitchen table. Donnie and April had been chanting "MIKEY, MIKEY, MIKEY," over and over again while Mikey stacked five pizza slices, which he apparently was trying to shove down his throat. They all immediately stopped what they were doing and turned around, looking like deer caught in headlights as soon as they heard my voice.
"Um...pizza?" April said, but it came out more like she was asking instead of telling.
"Hey, what's taking you guys so long, we gotta start heading up to the surface for pat-," Leo could be heard coming into the kitchen, but his voice died out as soon as he rounded the corner.
"What the fuck is going on?" He said in disbelief.
"Nothing," Mikey grumbled through the pizza still halfway in his mouth.
Leo's mouth opened, then closed, then opened, then closed again before he just shook his head and began to leave the room, muttering, "I'll be waiting up top whenever you're ready."
. . .
"You would never be able to tell they're turning 21 this year if you weren't told, like what the fuck dude," Leo sighed.
I chuckled, "Yeah, well, I don't think they'd be Mikey or Donnie if they didn't act like that."
Leo let out a groan but didn't say anything else, probably knowing I was right.
Suddenly, Donnie and Mikey came rushing onto the roof, taking off past us.
"Geez, what's taking you guys so long?" Donnie exclaimed as they ran by.
