Chapter 9. Hurt
Laurie pushed past me nearly knocking me over. One of the other girls laughed and walked past me. I turned to where they were and they just stared at me. “Don’t look at me”. Laurie said then she grabbed a bag of flour, opened it and flicked some at me. I tried to blink back the tears but it was hard. I walked off into the storage cupboard alone. I let it all out. Hurt from Adam and then embarassed by Laurie and everyone else at school.
I didn’t come out until everyone had gone. Joanne was stood by the door. When she saw me she gasped. “What happened?” She asked.
“Laurie”. I said. Joanne just nodded. She knew if someone said or did something to me that I would rather not talk about it.
“Come on lets get you clean”. She said. I followed behind her with my hood on my jumper up. My spaghetti bolognese was in my hands.
“Hey what happened?” Sam took my hood down. White powder fell onto the floor. “I don’t want to talk about it”. I mumbled.
“Here take these”. I handed the spaghetti bolognese to Sam.
“Are you sure?” He asked. I just nodded going quickly past him.
A few people from my year were in the corridors laughing. One of them spat at me. I just put my hood back up and hurried into the toilets.
When I walked into the toilets sohina and her friends were there smoking. They laughed at me because I had flour on me. “What are you doing in here, we can’t be seen in the same place as you.” Sohina said. The rest of them laughed. She was with three people in our year and two people in the year below.
Hannah grabbed hold of my coat and shoved me out of the door. My head hit the door but she kept pushing me. “Stay out of our place, if I see you again today I will knock you out”. Hannah said. She stubbed her fag out and laughed. Shutting the door behind me.
I just walked to the library and sat in the corner crying. No one noticed me. Or no one really cared. Sam had left me when I got to the toilets and Joanne had gone with Sam because her other two friends were outside.
Esme came into the library. “Hi Amy”. She said. I just smiled at her.
“What happened to you?” She eyed me. A few people looked our way and started laughing quietly. “Nothing”. I said shushing her. She didn’t get the hint.
“Shall I get Sam or Joanne?” She asked. “No”. I said sternly. She shrugged and got a pack of coloured pencils and paper.
We were silent for a minute. Then I heard Sam and Joanne come into the library. I sighed. “Sorry Amy they are your best friends”. Esme said.
“We demand to know what happened”. Joanne and Sam said. Then they laughed. I told them what happened in the toilets. “Hang on”. Joanne went out the library and came back minutes later with paper towels. “Here”. She handed me them and I wiped myself over.
“Thanks”. I said smiling.
The bell went after that. The librarian came and whisked us all out the library. I dried my eyes so she wouldn’t ask questions then sighed because it was english next.
I had Sam in my english but I also had Kate and Tom who were the meanest twins in the class. Everyone tried to impress them even our teacher. Kate and Tom managed to turn the class against us.
We entered the room and sat down. We were the first to come in. Miss Likesly just looked at us she didn’t talk to us. But she never does, she is worried if Kate or Tom see her talk to us then they will hate her and Kate threatened to get her fired. She didn’t even mark our work or hand us our folders.
People starting filling in, the room was full of conversation. Miss Likesly seemed a little relieved that she wasn’t in the room alone with us.
After 20 minutes Kate and Tom came in. People didn’t really bother with us at all we just kept our heads down when they walked in hand in hand. “Move your chair in NOW”. Kate screamed at us. We shuffled our chairs in quickly. Everyone just laughed at us. I held my head low.
We were watching a video in English, then next lesson we had to write an essay about it. We were watching Stand By Me.
Kate and Tom were making comments about everything as always. They were never happy. The teacher didn’t say anything at all. She just watched. Sam was writing me paper notes.
“Are you ok now”. He asked
“Yes thanks Sam”. I replied.
“You don’t look ok”. He was trying to make me talk but I really wasn’t in the mood.
“I AM FINE SAM”. I wrote back.
“Ok I was just asking, you know I care”. He said.
That’s how the whole lesson was like that. The bell went soon after for dinner.
Me and Sam headed to the library. We always stayed there till the dinner line went down. I also didn’t want to bump into Sohina or Laurie or the girls from the year below us. It was just safer to stay in the library because they never came here.
Joanne and Shannon were already there. They were on the computers. Esme was colouring with Kelly and a couple of her friends. “Hi Amy”. They both said when I came to them. Joanne turned around and waved.
Shannon didn’t do anything.
It was about half an hour before our dinner break was over. I just sat with Sam. Not really talking. Sam was still trying to ask me what was wrong, I just told him to back off. Joanne told him to stop bothering me.
When we eventually went downstairs to the dinner hall we had 20 minutes to eat. Me Sam and Shannon got our dinner vouchers and lined up. No one was there now, the dinner staff were putting everything away.
There wasn’t much left to get for dinner. All the best things had gone. Shannon ordered the last chicken wrap, I got a slice of pizza and Sam just got a sandwich.
We walked out of the dinner hall to sit in the hall chairs. Two girls from the year below us came up to us. At first we ignored them, but then they started kicking the chair we were in. Heidi knocked my pizza out of my hand. I tried to look like I didn’t care but that made her angry, she poured her apple juice all over me. Tara just stood there laughing. I had had enough of today.
I hadn’t seen or heard Adam since this morning. I didn’t have any lessons with him except one. He had betrayed me and now I was alone. Even though the people who bullied me also bullied my friends I still felt alone. I never told anyone about it, teachers could see what was going on and no one said anything. This is why I was dreading coming back to school especially with Adam.
I was so fed up of today. I needed to get cleaned up before I went home otherwise my mum and sister would question me.
The rest of the day was pretty much the same. In English, Millie and Toby teased and embarrassed me and Sam all lesson. I didn’t have any lessons with Adam at all so I couldn’t talk to him.
After the last bell had gone and I had walked by the side of the school and through the car park. I was surprised to see Adam stood on the other side of the road looking at me. I didn’t know what to do. Should I go to him or should I cross at the traffic lights further down the road and go the way I used to go with Sam. Sam was getting a lift from his mum because she wanted to go shopping.
I didn’t know what to do. I weighed the decisions up until I saw Adam smile, my heart melted and my knees weakened and I realised my body had already made my mind up for me.
