' Good morning, Amy'. Mum said in a loud cheery voice. Opening the curtains ' morning'. I said rubbing my eyes. It was another gorgeous day. The sun was bright and it was warm. I was going to have a great day ahead of me. I couldn't wait. Thinking about Adam, how we only met yesterday and how already I felt like I had known him longer. He was lovely. I couldn't wait to spend my summer with him.
' I’m about to put the kettle on, would you like a tea'. She said hovering round the door. ' Yes please' I said getting out of bed.
' So your spending the day with Adam, who by the way called earlier. Asking for your mobile number. Which I gave him'. She handed me a cup and a plate of toast. ' Why didn't you wake me up if he rang'. I asked suddenly worried that I missed one call. I was surprised with myself. Normally I might not of cared. All of a sudden a boy comes along and I care about every miniature thing he does. Mum also noticed my tone. I blushed again.
' Well I asked him if he wanted to talk to you, he said he didn't want to wake you. So he just wanted your number. Anyway I have got to get ready for the book club.' she walked out the kitchen. I got my phone out my dressing gown pocket it was flashing. A text.
Hi Amy, say thanks to your mum for giving me your number. See you later. Xx
I studied the kisses for a minute, maybe they were just friendly. Or he was hinting that he liked me. I was being stupid. Everyone puts kisses in text. It was friendly. Adam was probably being friendly. I imagined him putting a restraining order on me for being mad. It was his fault though.
I was in my room picking clothes to wear for tonight. Nothing too formal, nothing too scruffy. I wanted to care but not too much. I found my favourite white three quarter bottoms and red strap top. I would wear my red sandals. Very summery and laid back, but smart. Just then my door opened and my sister came in. she looked rough.
' Morning' I said laying my clothes on my bed.
' I heard you got a date'. She said. ' The new neighbours'. Mum had obviously filled her in. ' its not a date, we are hanging out together'. I smiled.
'Well whatever you call it, are you going to wear them old clothes'. She nodded at my clothes I laid out on the bed.
' Well yeah, I was planning on it'. I said.
' Come in my room, I’ll find you something nice'. She said leading me into her room.
Clothes everywhere, bed untidy. Make-up smudged in the floor.
I had to kick everything out the way. ' I don't want anything too formal, but nothing scruffy'. I said. She looked offended.
' OK then you will want this'. She said picking out a plain white vest top, and black baggy three quarters. I just nodded and went back to my room. I picked out some shoes and a necklace to go with my clothes, ( well Sophie’s clothes). I wondered what to do with my hair. I eventually settled for curling it, which took about an hour.
'You look nice Amy'. My mum said setting the table for her book club. ' Thanks I mumbled getting a cup and pouring orange into it. I sipped my orange whilst my mum was answering the phone to Mrs Creat. She was on her way. With Adam. I suddenly got a swishing feeling inside me, I was a little nervous but excited as well.
Most of the guests arrived before Mandy came. They said they were on their way, how long does on their way take. Anyway, everyone was gathered round the table discussing Romeo and Juliet. ' So what did you get out of the book'. My mum asked everyone. I was waiting for Adam so I just sat at the table nodding occasionally, and handing out biscuits and tea.
' I cried at the end of it'. Julie said. She had closed the shop for the day to come to this book club. I just rolled my eyes. How could anyone cry at the end of a book, a love tragedy, kill or die for the one you loved. I had to read it at school and write an essay about it. ' OK what about you Melissa'. Mum asked. Melissa was a work friend from school. ' I loved it, a classic novel, it has everything that a classic novel should have. It is love, and hate, dying for the one you love'. I had had enough of this.
