Chapter 8. The truth
“Hey Adam why don’t you sit next to us”. Alan said. Adam just looked at me. I smiled at him. All my friends were asking how we met and are we together. We answered them honestly. Alan shrieked of laughter. “You are going out with that”. He said. Everyone laughed at that. I looked down again, tears in my eyes. Why wasn’t Adam defending me? After everything we did in the holidays. Was he seeing what others seen? Why no one touched anything I touched or spoke to me and if they did it would be cruel hurtful words. I didn’t know why people reacted this way towards me. But Alan would turn Adam against me in no time. Like everyone else.
“Adam”. I whispered. He was talking to Alan. He looked at me. “Hang on a minute Alan is telling me something”. He said. “No now”. I shouted a little too loud. Everyone turned and stared at me. “What?”. He hissed at me. “Never mind”. I said turning to my friends. “Why does everything good that happens to me go away?”. I said.
“Yes, that is life Amy. Get used to it”. My friend shannon said. She didn’t look too bothered. “Don’t worry about her, Are you ok?”. Sam asked. I just nodded.
The rest of the lesson we had to finish writing a letter to the government about coming to our school to make people aware of recycling. I had nearly finished mine already.
Adam ignored me the rest of the lesson. He was talking to Alan about football. He didn’t even look my way all lesson. “So what did you do in the summer holidays?” Joanne asked directing my attention from Adam. Alan was giving me dirty looks and Adam was just laughing at him. “My summer was lovely, better than lovely. It was amazing me and Adam just clicked straight the way. He even said I love you to me”. I said. Joanne raised her eyebrow at me. “If he said that why is he acting like he is?”Joanne asked. “I don’t know, Alan has probably told him a load of lies to stop him talking to me, so now Adam will be like everyone else”. I said. I was desperate for answers from him.
When the bell went Adam rushed out with Alan and colin. “Go catch him up. I will clean up”. Joanne said. “Thanks”. I said to her. I grabbed my bag and rushed out to Adam. He was sat with Alan and Colin. “Adam can I have a word”. I said to him. Colin and Alan laughed. I blushed. “Erm let me think about that.. No”. Alan answered. Adam, Colin and Alan laughed again. “ADAM”. I shouted at him folding my arms. He stopped laughing. “What?” He shouted.
I grabbed him and took him somewhere more private. “Why are you ignoring me?” I asked. He looked at Alan and Colin who were giving us dirty looks.
“I am not ignoring you, just getting to know people”. He said.
“Yes but…But if you get to know them, they will tell you things about me and then you will hate me”. I said. My voice was desperate.
Adam didn’t seem to catch the desperateness of my voice. He didn’t seem bothered at all. I held back the tears.
“Amy I don’t hate you but I need a favour”. He said. I found myself nodding. I didn’t know why I was agreeing after how he was treating me. I was angry at myself. I didn’t know what to do. Our parents were friends and I knew I couldn’t tell my mum or Mandy about this.
“Amy I need you to pretend that we aren’t together, we can hang out at home and around our areas but we can’t at school ok?” He asked.
I felt like I had been punched in my face. Who did he think he was? I knew he definitely wasn’t the person I had met in the summer. Why was he doing this? Did he know that I cared about him? Did he know what I had been through already at school, the one good thing was now turning to bad like everyone else he believed every word they were feeding him.
Sam also heard this. He rushed over to me. “Come on Amy”. He grabbed my hand and handed me a tissue.
“Why is he doing this to me?” I cried. People stared at me but neither me or Sam cared. Sam pulled me into a corner of the corridor.
“I don’t know Amy, what did he say?” Sam asked.
“He said he wants us to be together at home but he wants nothing to do with me at school”. I said. Crying again. Sam hugged me.
Shannon and Joanne came out of the hall. “Amy are you ok?” Joanne asked. I just nodded turning away so she couldn’t see me cry. She still came up to me. “Amy he seriously isn’t worth it”. Joanne said.
“He was so nice this summer, he really was”. I said. They didn’t seem convinced. “Are you coming to food?” Joanne asked. I nodded following her. “Take care Amy, I will be right outside your lesosn when you finish”. Sam said. I smiled and hugged him. “Thank you Sam”. I said. He just smiled. “No problem”. He said.
The walk to food was quiet. Joanne didn’t say anything to me. I didn’t mind I had too much to think about. That was it wasn’t it? Me and Adam. Finished just because of school. If he had cared about me he wouldn’t believe people so quickly. Or maybe he badly wanted to be accepted. Whatever it was I hated it. The new person he had become.
We were cooking in food. Joanne was cooking a complicated italian dish. She didn’t mention Adam the whole lesson. I kept myself busy cooking my spaghetti bolognese. I didn’t really have much time to think about Adam, if I thought about him I would feel tears in my eyes and I would bite my lip to stop myself being angry.
The lesson did go pretty fast. I was wrapping my spaghetti bolognese in cling film. I heard someone in my class talking. I took my food and headed to the storage room. I could hear the people clearer now.
“Hey did you see that new boy”. One of them said.
“Yeah, but apprently he is going out with Amy”. I recognised the voice of the second one. It was laurie. She was one of the most popular girls at school. But also the meanest.
“He is going out with her!”. Then I heard one of Laurie’s friends say.
“No apparently he dumped her when he found out what she is like”. She said.
I took a deep breath and went in the room the girls were in. “Talk about the tramp and she appears”. Laurie said. I just blushed. I could feel how hot my cheeks were. Laurie and the others just laughed.
“Hey bitch, don’t even think about talking to Adam again”. I heard Laurie say. The other two giggled. I blushed deeper. I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want Laurie to do anything. I was already upset about Adam as it was I didn’t need this. I just wanted to go home and lay in bed never to be seen again.
