Chapter 10: Chasing the Nights

John's POV

On that Friday morning, John is dressed in his police uniform, confidently strolling across Manhattan. He observes two young 14-year-old boys fighting each other. They both wore sports caps, simple casual jumpers, and trousers. He rushes to them, separating them.

"Okay, that's enough. What's the problem here?"

The boys whine and groan. "He started it!" One says as the other snarls in a screechy voice. "He just can't handle that he is not worthy of dating a schoolgirl." As the first boy shoves him, the other says. John pulls them apart by grabbing both of their collars.

"Well, you two should be in class working on your grades, not women."

The boys simply gaze at him in silence. "I'll call your parents if you keep skipping school." John asserts firmly. "Yes, sir." As they depart together, they both apologize. John shakes his head and sighs. He scowls, as he examines the crimson pocket knife that Jordan and Mona discovered at the crime scene. He gives it a serious glance before tapping the knife in his palm as he muses.

John opens his car door, sitting down as he closes the door beside him. He starts the engine while seated in his police vehicle. The radio quickly plays the chorus of Eric Carman's song, 'Hungry Eyes.' After shifting into drive, he begins to leave the parking lot.

I couldn't help but think about the kids all morning. Concerning the investigation and my son. I found out that Mona can see Tarni. I now understand how difficult this must be for her. However, I have been because Jones isn't trying, and something just seems off. Mona was right. Perhaps it was just a result of our toxic history.

The hardest part is that my son no longer even looks up to me. Perhaps I have been too harsh on him, and I should start to understand what he truly wants to be and achieve. I should tell him about my backstory, but what if he has a different opinion of me? With this, I've been attempting to be there for the kids. But I work in this field!

I'm not allowing anyone to tell me what's right or wrong! I was unable to assist my family previously. I'm going to get everything straight!

~~~
John shuts off the ignition and slouches back in his car as he approaches Bingo's home. He sighs heavily as he scans the tidy, rural home. He exits the vehicle and approaches the entrance. He knocks three times as he gets prepared.
The door is answered by a female wearing a casual lime green dress, black flats, and a medium bob cut with dark brown hair and brown eyes. She has soft baby pink cheeks, and silky, defined lips from wearing lip gloss. "Are you Mrs. Carven?" He poses thoughtful inquiry. "Can I help you?" John's stance straightens.
