Chapter 19: True Self
Officer Jones is reading documents while working late at his desk in his office by himself. He places the papers in the desk drawer. He takes out Tarni McGavin's case folder after taking a look at the drawer. He opens it up after inhaling. He discovers the key is missing as he scans the documents. His eyes widen as he places the folder on his desk and searches the area around it.
"Fucking Haynes and those kids!"
He quickly stands up and searches through each drawer for the key after that, in a panic. "Shit!" he yells angrily as he slams his hands against a cabinet. Jones turns to face Mathew McGavin, who is seen slouching close to his open office door. He reacts in astonishment.
"Mr McGavin? What are you doing here?"
Matthew enters with a grin on his face. "I merely came to speak. However, it appears that maybe it's not a good time."
Jones frowns. "No, please do take a seat."
Matthew walks over to his desk and sinks into a comfortable chair. "What can I help you with?" Jones says this as he positions himself to take a seat. Matthew sways his body. "I wanted to talk about my daughter's case." Jones's head shakes in a perplexed, confused manner. "Sure? Well? What is there to discuss? Bingo is being held in juvenile jail for the time being until further investigation."
Matthew cuts him off. "Bingo didn't kill my daughter, in my opinion. And they did not destroy my business. As much as I never liked him hanging around my daughter, I do not believe he had any intention to harm her." Jones leans back in his seat. "What do you mean, Matt? There is evidence that he took part. Didn't you want justice for your daughter? The peace she can rest in?"
Matthew firmly shakes his head. "I do. Look, I have no idea how much Henry pays you or tells you, but I think you ought to start doing your job correctly. As a sheriff, it is your responsibility to serve and protect the public." Jones becomes lost for words, and Matthew sighs deeply.
"I'm not here to threaten you, Jones, because if I had proof that you are just some corrupt cop behind all this, you might not have a job left." Matthew's lips tighten, and his glare becomes serious. "I am giving you a warning. You know this is wrong. If you had a child, you would be in my shoes and understand how our family feels." Matthew stands to his feet and brushes his creased, brown blouse.
"There is no need for anyone to know because this is a private conversation between us. It's never too late to make the right decision."
"Have a good evening, Officer."
Jones bites his lip in guilt as he observes Matthew leave in silence.
