Chapter 21: The Yellow Raincoat
That night, it stormed. The rain was cold it felt like ice prickling on my skin. I was cold, I waited, and he didn't show. I tried to call him, but no answer. I tried to text, but no answer. A few minutes later, he texted me saying he had to work back tonight. Work back? To let me know a few hours later, that is just low. I hopped back into the car, but the engine wasn't starting. I think the battery must have died. Could my night get any worse? So, I grabbed my things and decided to walk home.
A lot went through my mind that night. I could slightly feel my mascara dripping into my eyes. I didn't cry, I was mostly numb from the cold and the fact I had to wait hours for him to eventually text, 'Hey Mona, I can't see you tonight. I have to work back.' Not even an apology? And I had to sleep with him. Fuck, I am no better than him. But you know what, I should have seen it coming. I mean, It pissed me off that he couldn't tell me earlier that he had work and I had to wait in the rain. Relationships and feelings always get in the way. All guys just want one thing. UGH. I didn't feel like talking to Tarni or anyone. I wanted to be alone.
As the rain poured, Bailey in a white buttoned long-sleeve shirt sat in his car watching the rain hit the windscreen. He is interrupted by his phone which starts to buzz in the car's dash. When he goes to answer it, he notices a strange number appear. He frowns and says,
"Hello?"
Muffled sounds start to come out of his phone. He reacts confused. "Who is this?" A deep voice answers and all it says is, "I'd watch yourself here." Bailey clenches his fists. "If this is Charlie, I ain't fucking interested in what you are scheming. Just leave Mona alone creep." Bailey hangs up. He then glances at his phone disturbed by the call. As he looks out of his car windscreen, he notices Mona drenched walking through the empty, quiet streets ahead. His expression becomes concerned. She quickly gets under shelter near a little antique shop and slumps down in tears. Bailey quickly gets out of his navy blue convertible and rushes over to her.
Mona sobs and trembles from the cold. She glances up to notice Bailey in front of her. He kneels to check on her. "Mona? What are you doing out here in the cold? What's wrong?" She doesn't respond as her trembles make her fumble her words. "Let's get you warmed up." He lifts her and brings her to his car.
As Bailey helps her into the car, Bailey hops in putting the heater on for Mona to warm up. He gazes at her troubled. "What happened Mona?" She quickly glances at Bailey dejectedly. "I got stood down." Bailey's eyebrows scrunch as she shrugs her shoulders and gazes out the car window. "By who?" Mona turns to face him giving him an annoyed facial expression. "Jordan." Bailey reacted taken aback by her response.
"Really?"
"Yeah. He said he had to work back. I don't believe that one bit. I believe he's just playing games. He does it with all women. Sleep around for his pleasure then dumps them."
