Your relationship with Velma Kelly was unconventional. If you could even call it a relationship. You had been performing alongside her for years but still knew so little about her. You weren't that surprised when she wound up in jail though. You had always known that she had a very dark side indeed.
You felt stupid and out of place walking amongst the cells and were about to leave when you heard a familiar voice. "(Y/N)?" You stopped for a moment, she never failed to give you chills. You met her eyes and tried not to give away your nerves. "Never thought I'd see you in a place like this." Velma remained ever-confident and seemed to be quite comfortable. "Well, I'm just visiting." Velma's signature smirk disappeared with your words. She gave a very short and very fake chuckle. "Just visiting? I thought you were here to rescue me." You couldn't believe that she would flat-out ask you, she really must have been desperate. For once, you were the cool one. "And how would I do that? I don't have any money." Velma rolled her eyes, allowing herself to be visibly annoyed at you. "Oh, please, (Y/N). You never go out anywhere and, when you do, you always drink for free." You gave a sigh. For once she wasn't charming and you actually resented her. "Even if I could pay the bail for you, what's in it for me?" She stared at you without resentment or power or any emotion at all. Just blank. When you realised she wasn't going to say anything, you just turned to leave. "I hope you got a good layer, Velma!"
You don't know why you went back to visit her the next day, she just had a hold over you. "I knew you couldn't stand to leave me here." Velma had always been so smug, but your patience had finally worn thin. "Just saying goodbye, Velma. I'm guessing I won't see you again if you face the death penalty." This made Velma grow nervous and take up a softer demeanour. "I'm sorry, (Y/N), it's been a crazy time for me. I promise I will do anything you ask of me if you just bail me out of here." You smiled, enjoying the newfound power you had over her. "Sorry, Velma, but that deal is off the table now. I suppose I could be a witness at your trial... and I'm sure I will be able to think of something you can do in return by the time you are free."
"Now, (Y/N), do you mind telling the court where you were on the night of the murder?" You took a deep breath and tried to appear as calm and confident as possible. "I was performing with Velma." You tried to keep your answers brief, not giving away anything more than you needed to. "And did the defendant do anything out of the ordinary? Show up late, perhaps, or act strange." You remembered seeing Velma changing at the side of the stage minutes before you were due to go on, she seemed flustered right until the moment the spotlight hit her. You never had the courage to ask her about it at the time. "No." You replied, not quite believing your ability to lie so openly.
"But you did not see the defendant earlier in the day?" You were starting to grow uncomfortable. "No. You have to understand we're really not that close. Strictly a business relationship." The sad thing was that most of what you were saying was actually true.
The verdict came back as 'not guilty' and Velma was delighted with you. "You were wonderful, (Y/N)! I will never forget your talents. I also haven't forgotten that I owe you, so what can I possibly do to repay you?" She had her hands placed on your arms and you could smell her perfume as she looked into your eyes. "I was just hoping that we could go out somewhere, just the two of us." She gave you a look that you couldn't quite pinpoint. "Like a date?" You had thought she would try to get out of it, she really had no need to go through with it. "You know, Velma, I could have just left you behind. I'm the only reason why you're standing here right now."
"Sounds lovely." She gave you a wink and left you stunned. Always full of surprises.
