| CHAPTER XXVIII |

Louis and I drove past the reception to the elevator that would take us to the meeting room of the building. It was in the early afternoon when all the leaders of the company were waiting for my father to arrive, including Mr. Bower and all the representatives of the Bower company. It was an urgent meeting because the most important people were present.

I held the air in my lungs for a few seconds before saying hello to everyone and taking my seat at the table just beside my husband. Liam was standing in front of me and he didn't look relaxed, there was some concern in his eyes. I wanted to go over to him and ask, but I didn't even have to.

My father showed up with his two assistants. Sixteen people around that table were waiting to hear about the topic of the meeting, which no one knew about.

"Good afternoon, everyone. I regret that I delayed the commitments of some of you this afternoon, but the subject is of great importance. This meeting will not last long because I will be going straight to the point and I thank you all in advance for your presence." Said my father as he took the main chair.

"Mr. Malik, I'm sorry to interrupt, but do you really think we have to do this today? There is still much to evaluate before making any announcement." said Liam, deeply concerned.

"Announcement? What kind of announcement?" Bower asked with some enviable cheerfulness for an afternoon like that. "Don't tell me you're retiring."

Silence prevailed in the room. The thing I was most afraid of had happened.

"How did you guess?" said my father between laughs.

It also made other people laugh, many of them laughing because they thought it was a big joke. And I wish it was.

"Wait...is that serious? Are you retiring?" asked one of the executives, looking surprised at the man sitting in the main chair.

"It wasn't an easy decision. But it's the right thing to do. I am old, not so old to dig my own grave, but... I'm old enough to know that I should step away from the business and take care of my health, my marriage, and to give Zayn this incredible opportunity. He's been waiting a long time for that, isn't it right, my son?"

All eyes were now turned towards me and on my lack of reaction to the news that succeeded in ruining with all my plans. There's not much time left.

"No. Zayn isn't ready for that yet. It's too soon." Liam commented.

"Shut up, Liam! I know what I'm doing, don't be nosy! Unless you want to leave the room right now, keep your mouth shut!" replied my father so rudely that it embarrassed my friend.

"Don't speak like that to your most faithful employee. Without his job, your business would be a shame. Liam has a far better corporate vision than you, he knows what is best for this company." I said when I took control of the discussion.
