I choked.
I wasn't even sure I could choke because I wasn't even breathing.

I wasn't sure of a lot of things. I wasn't sure to what extent my body was functioning.

But I was totally certain that in that moment my heart both swelled up and broke as I took in the little form beside me.

Little Ana.

She was here.

She was standing a few feet away, but there was no mistaking it.

"Anastasia?" I breathed.

All she did in response was run up to me and jump and smile while clapping her hands. Her dark curls bouncing with each jump.

She was actually here.

Looking exactly like how she did right before we lost her. Like not a day had passed.

"Adrianna you're here! I'm so happy. I missed you."

Pushing myself up, I pulled her small frame into my arms and I cooed. "Aw, sweetie, we missed you so much too." I tried not to cry. This was all so overwhelming. I didn't understand how all this was possible. How was she here? How was I here? What even is here?

"I'm so glad you're here" she smiled, but then she got a bit solemn and looked at me, a small frown marring her features, "but you shouldn't be here. It's not nice here, why are you here?"

Oh no.
Oh poor baby.
And my heart broke again.

I didn't even know where 'here' was.
But whatever it is, it must have been awful for her. She shouldn't be here.

Looking around briefly I noticed we were surrounded by lots of dull green trees. We were on a flat plain which allowed me to see what felt like miles and miles of ground in each direction that wasn't completely blocked off by trees. I could see the horizon line, which by all means is natural, but nothing felt natural here.

Even my hug didn't feel natural. I was holding her, yes, but I couldn't feel her. It didn't feel real. I felt like I was living in a fever dream.
Maybe that's all that this was.
Maybe I'm going to wake up and be 15 again and everything would have been a dream.

"We're in limbo." A voice came from behind me. I shot up and turned around, Anastasia still in my grip. I wasn't letting her go.

I was looking at me, but with golden eyes.
My wolf.

"Oh you're here too."

"Yeah, I am."

"Where are we?"

"Not entirely sure, but it seems we got caught in limbo."

"Limbo?"

"Yeah, like an in between land."

"In between? Between what?"

"Earth and afterlife I assume."

What?
So this isn't the afterlife?
I don't know whether to be relieved or worried.

"So why are we here? Why is she here?" I turned to look down at Anastasia.
She just looked up at me with her big blue beautiful eyes that still held so much innocence in them. Her eyes so full of life that contrasted so much with this place that just felt dead.

My wolf looked past me at Anastasia. She took her time to study her, her eyes getting sorrowful for a brief moment, and then shrugged. "She was taken before her time, and so maybe she got caught in limbo." She ended looking around again at the place where we were.

Which looked like a whole bunch of nothing.

I mean, yeah, we were in the a field surrounded by what looked like nature, but everything felt dead, or frozen. Taking my time to study the dull trees, I could see that the stillness here was overwhelming. Like we were dropped in a snapshot of time on an overcast day. No wind, all trees and leaves, even the blades of grass were completely still. No animals, insects, probably no microbes either, no form of life at all.
There was no life, no movement, there weren't even sun rays.
Just grey everywhere.
