We woke up to our cells being forcefully drawn open, the sound of metal bars banging.
"Get up you lazy animals." one of the guards who unlocked our cell, kicked me in the ribs.
Ah, its the red head guard from yesterday. Dan.
And I was sure to catch the scowl he threw my way as he kicked me.
Sour puss.
"Ow." I whined, getting up and looking around to see chaos in the dungeons as people were dragged out of their cells. The males putting up a fight since their sedatives have obviously worn off, females less so.
At this point though, why bother.
"Hey watch it." Mavis mumbled as Dan kicked her too, not as hard as mine but painful nonetheless.
Then we heard a growl.
"That will be the last time you ever touch her. Got that?" We turned to see a fuming James glare at Dan, a frown marring his handsome face.
He rushed to Mavis and helped her off the ground, whilst I stood up also. James cupped her face and asked her if she was okay, and she shyly nodded.
James smiled and placed a soft kiss on her cheek.
Dan's eyes flicked back and forth between them, seemingly now realising what was going on. His eyes widened in shock and regret as he took several steps back.
"I'm sorry Sir, I didn't know she was your uhm,... mate." Dan said his voice full of embarrassment as he lowered his head.
Sir?
"Get out." James ordered, and Dan scrambled out of the cell. After Dan left we could see James physically relax his wolf side retreating.
"Are you okay?" James asked turning to me. He had his arm around Mavis' waist, who was blushing furiously.
"Yeah, thanks, but what's with all the hassle?" I asked him stifling a yawn and stretching a bit.
"You are being assessed at the training grounds today, in order to place you in the pack. And training starts at 5 am." James said casually, whilst flipping some of his hair from his forehead.
"Wait, five am? Its five fricking am?" I asked exasperated. What kind of cruel animal wakes you up at 5 am?
Oh yeah, my mate.
Come to think of it, school does that to me too.
"Actually its 4:40 am, the Alpha doesn't like tardiness." James said glancing at his watch. "We better get going. Oh, by the way I'm James Kyle." James extended a friendly hand for me to shake. And once I came out from the shock that its actually 4: 40 am, I accepted his hand and shook it.
"Adriane Clark." And with that, he escorted us out of the cell and led us to a back door at the other end of the hall, opposite where everyone else was being led out of.
We climbed up a few stairs and when he opened the steel door with some combination pin code, I was met with the fresh morning breeze that I had missed for so long. I stepped out onto the grass and almost kissed the ground.
"Wow, I've missed this." I mumbled stretching my tense limbs fully and taking a long deep breath of air. It was quite an improvement to the stuffy smelling dungeon air.
Outside was cool and a bit foggy and the breeze smelt like rain. It was either about to rain or it had already rained somewhere else.
Needless to say, I was loving every bit of my freedom now.
"Me too, I don't want to go back in there." Mavis smiled at me repeating my actions.
James gently turned her head to face him and tilted her chin upwards due to his height, Mavis wasn't too tall either.
"And you won't, I promise." he leaned in and gave her a short kiss on her lips and pulled away, beaming at her.
I looked over at them and unconsciously had a feeling of longing for that, a connection, a relationship, something to hold on to.
"Okay, we need to get going we're already late. You girls up for a run?"
