What?

She took on the stance that we usually take on when we're trying to gauge our surroundings, head to the side, eyes looking off to the distance, all other senses on high alert.
"We died. So technically we shouldn't be here, much less together." She looked up briefly and then down again, looking for something I presume. "I think something is happening."

Much less together?
I never considered much the notion of death in wolves and what it means for their human and wolf side. Does it mean they'd get separated in the afterlife? How does any of this work?

She closed her eyes briefly.
"I can feel it, the moonstone," opening her eyes she looked back at me, "they're trying to revive us."

Revive us?

Looking down at the moonstone around my neck, it was still glowing. I didn't even know I still had it on.
Did that stay on during my entire fight with Sarah?
And if I'm dead and in limbo land how do I have it here with me? Does that mean it's magic works here too?

But that did nothing to bring me relief.
Ana was still here.

"But we can't leave, we can't just leave Ana here."
Anastasia grabbed a tight hold of my legs.

"I don't want to be here anymore. It's boring." She pouted. And my heart bled. This poor baby. She didn't deserve any of this.

"There must be a way to get her back. Take her with me, with us. Maybe there's a reason she hasn't found peace yet."
There had to be a way. She has to be here for a reason.
If it is really possible for them to bring us back, there has to be a way to get Ana back as well. Somehow.

"Look, I don't know how all this works but I can feel our foothold getting shaky, we may not have much time left, regardless of whether they're successful in bringing us back or not, we're not staying in limbo much longer.
I'm sorry but you have to bid the little wolf goodbye. Its out of our hands."

Tears started streaming down my cheek. No, I wasn't leaving her. I couldn't, especially knowing she's trapped in some sort of no peace limbo. She shouldn't be here.

"What if I send her back in my place instead? Can that work?"

My wolf locked eyes with me again.
"You ask me these questions like I've been here before. I don't know what's even happening let alone if that's possible."

"You just seem to know so much, isn't there a way we can send her back?" My hand instantly flew to the necklace on my neck.
"What if I put this on her? Would that work?."
My wolf regarded me for a long time and looked at the tiny girl in my arms before she sighed.

"Look, again, I have no idea, but if that's something you're willing to try then you have to do it now, we're fading."

I quickly pulled the necklace off of me and the moment I did that I instantly felt heavy. Like the atmospheric pressure that was on me increased by a tenfold.

But I worked through it to get the moonstone to Anastasia.
She looked at me with wide confused eyes and watched on as I placed the necklace on her.

I let go and my heart sunk as I watched it fall straight through her.

No.

***

I tried again placing it gently this time.

It fell through again.
And again and again. My hands getting shakier each time as I grew more and more frustrated and I felt myself detach more and more from this place.

"Why isn't this working!?" I said through tears. I could hold her, touch her, and feel her, somewhat, and yet the necklace couldn't just stay on her.

I watched as the pendant fell to the ground time and time again, losing its glow each time it went out of contact with me.

"Because it's not mine." Her little saddened voice came through.
She looked up at me with her wide innocent blue eyes, like she understood something I was refusing to accept.

I picked the moonstone up one last time but this time Ana caught my hands, and she moved them back to put the necklace back on me.

"No Ana." More tears slid down my cheeks.

"It's okay, Mrs. Bolton will be here soon. She's my friend. I know I can't go with you." Her voice was small.

My heart broke again. I can't leave her. I don't want to leave her here.

"If I can't take you I don't want to go back. I can't just leave you here."

My wolf remained silent, watching our exchange with pitiful eyes and I wasn't sure if she was feeling sorry for me who was bawling my eyes out, or for the child who had seemingly accepted her gloomy fate.

I saw a woman off in the distance walking towards us. Ana turned and smiled.
"It's okay, go back to Damon, and give him a hug for me. I'll be with Mrs. Bolton." Then she gave me a hug.

My wolf spoke up. "Adrianne, I'm so sorry but it's time," even as she spoke I could see her start to disappear.

Ana tried to move out of my grasp, but I held on.
"No, no, I'm not going without you. No." I held on as tightly as I could.

I saw the woman smile at me as though she found my effort cute but futile.

"Back to the place where she lay." She smiled at me.
What?

"She wants us to go and sleep." Ana told me. She was fading too, or maybe I was. Either way, I was losing her. Drifting away.

"Adrianna I'm tired."

No, no no. Hang on to me, please.

And then I faded away. With Ana still firmly in my grasp.
