"He was the only child of his parents. His mother, having had complications, nearly died while giving birth to him. His father, not willing to risk loosing his mate, did not allow her to have any more children after that. Luckily for the couple their child was a boy. A perfect future Alpha.
Roderick and Natalie loved their son to pieces. And they took every second of the day to show him that. They were such a perfect little family.
But Damon was even more attached to his father which is why that day, his dad went out hunting with some of his colleagues, he didn't want to let him go.
Call me crazy but I think the boy felt it. He knew he would never get to see his dad again. The poor thing cried the whole night. His father's Beta came the following morning, dirty and bloody, with the terrible news that the Alpha had been killed. Damon took the news hard, though young, he understood very well what death meant. But the person who suffered the worst blow was his mom. She lost it, literally. She went mad after hearing the news. Feeling that loss.
One of the many effects of losing a mate." She sighed and looked meaningfully at me.
"Damon's uncle Jack, my mate, had to take the role of Alpha. The poor boy was still too young for it."
Up to that point in Latifah's speech, I thought she was just telling me a sad random story about some other Damon.
Until she put herself in and I registered that she was talking about our Damon. Wait, what?
"Damon changed, he became quiet and secluded, but he was always around his mom. He never left her side, he loved her very deeply even though she was insane. Those two became even more inseparable than before, they spent every waking day together.
But Damon was growing, every day looking more and more like his dad, and his mom, she couldn't stand the pain. She lost it, and killed herself.
No one saw it coming.
Not even Damon."
I could feel the blood drain from my face as I looked at Latifah who had also become pale, undoubtedly recalling that awful incident.
"He rebelled. He went on a rampage. He was fourteen when she died. His mom's death was the last straw, he went round outside of pack grounds killing anyone on sight. He was unusually powerful for his age. We thought we were going to have to lock him up but after a few months he suddenly stopped.
It wasn't until he was fifteen and the Alpha, my mate was supposed to be getting ready to give the leadership to Damon in year, was also killed." Latifah paused. I could see the tears she was so desperately trying to push back shine through.
Eventually she let them slip, wiped her face quickly, then continued.
And I just sat there looking at her.
"Damon was forced to take the role of Alpha a whole year before he was supposed to. But he seemed like he was ready for it. He matured years ahead of his age. But in hindsight, he really wasn't ready, not by a longshot." She let out a bitter chuckle. "He was a cold and bitter boy. He became our Alpha. He has been like that ever since."
Wow...
So much information.
It's a lot to handle.
"And Ana is another story although you already know some of it."
Yay, more.
"Damon's mother had a sister, Lorraine, who died shortly after giving birth to her child. Ana. Lorraine was based in London, where she met her human mate that unfortunately didn't stick around after he found out what she was. She was already pregnant by the time he left. After Lorraine died, the help she'd hired to aid her during the last trimester and with the baby once she gave birth opted to take care of the child till her family came to take her.
She stayed with her till she was one and a half years old before she came to live with us. "
