The figure dressed in black, clutching a bloody knife, dashed past the group of four, leaving a trail of panic in its wake. Kate's scream pierced the air as Simon instinctively grabbed both Reyes and Kate's hands, pulling them along with urgency. Josh followed closely behind, fear coursing through him; he had no intention of becoming the next victim.
Reyes felt her heart pounding violently against her ribcage, a primal fear coursing through her veins as they sprinted toward the front entrance.
"Where are the keys? Do you have the keys?" Simon shouted, glancing back at his friends, desperation etched across his face.
"No!" They all shouted back in unison, their voices a chaotic blend of panic and disbelief.
The overhead hospital lights flickered ominously, the flashing illuminating their terrified faces and amplifying Reyes's anxiety to a near unbearable level.
"Come on, the ambulance!" Kate yelled, bursting through the exit, her determination pushing them forward.
But as the others rushed outside, Reyes hesitated, her instincts screaming at her to stay. She couldn't abandon Sam and Deena to this monster. Terror clawed at her throat, but she steeled herself, making a decision born from loyalty and fear.
"Guys, I can't leave them!" She shouted, her voice drowned out by the chaos. Before anyone could respond, she turned and sprinted back into the fray.
Reyes tiptoed cautiously to the nurse's desk, heart racing, where she found Sam and Deena huddled together, their faces pale and eyes wide with terror. Without hesitation, she joined them, sliding down beside Sam, who immediately grasped Reyes's hand tightly, as if anchoring herself to reality.
The masked figure lingered at the front entrance, sniffing the air like a predator on the hunt. What was he doing?
Reyes's gaze shifted, landing on the gruesome scene of a nurse's mutilated body sprawled grotesquely on the floor. A wave of nausea threatened to overwhelm her, bile rising in her throat as she took in the carnage. Blood splattered across the desk, pooling on the floor, and staining her new sneakers. It was a slaughterhouse.
