"I'm going to go babysit with Kate now, ama!" Reyes shouted, her voice echoing through the empty rooms of their home.

"Okay! Have a good time!" Her father called back from somewhere out of sight. The response was cheerful, but it lacked its usual warmth, and Reyes couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Her mother still hadn't come back from visiting her friend, and the longer she stayed away, the more confusion and worry gnawed at Reyes. Was this about the Sheriff's strange interest in her aunt?

She shook her head, trying to dispel the unsettling thoughts. It's probably nothing. Just a friendly visit. But as she glanced at the clock, time felt like it was slipping away.

Just as she was about to step out the door, the phone rang, jolting her back to the moment. Reyes leaned over to pick it up, her heart racing with an odd sense of foreboding.

"Hello?" She answered, the chill in her voice betraying her unease.

"Good, you're at home." It was Deena, her tone urgent and clipped.

"Yeah, although I'm just about to leave to go babysit with Kate. Why do you ask?" Reyes could hear the concern creeping into her voice.

"Sam's new boyfriend is dicking around my house." Deena said, the words tumbling out in a rush.

"What? Really?" Reyes felt a shiver crawl up her spine. The last thing they needed was more chaos, especially after everything that had happened.

"Yeah, he's wearing a mask that looks just like the one Ryan wore when he killed Heather. It's super fucking creepy." Deena replied, her voice quaking with unease.

Reyes's stomach dropped. "Okay, don't worry. Why don't you and Josh meet me at Kate's house?"

"I'll think about it. But if you run into the asshole, make sure you punch him for me." Deena said, a hint of humour in her tone.

"Will do." Reyes hung up the phone, her heart pounding. She felt a rush of protective instinct for her friends, but as she stepped out into the night, a heavy cloud of dread settled over her.
