Reyes boarded the bus, scanning the rows until she spotted Simon near the front, lounging with his usual cocky grin, his face smeared with garish green makeup. She stifled a laugh as she slid into the seat beside him.
"Wow." Reyes teased, nudging him with her elbow. "Really going all out with the school spirit, huh, Simon? What's next? Dressing up as the devil?"
Simon shot her a look, grinning as he stretched his arms across the seat's back. "Please. Sunnyvale wishes they had someone as cool as me representing them. They couldn't handle this much awesome."
The bus steadily filled as students poured in, their chatter mixing with the hiss of the air conditioning. The usual buzz of game-day excitement was muted by the somber tone of today's trip. An announcement had forced all cheerleaders, band members, and football players to attend this match to pay tribute to Heather and the other people who had died last night. Reyes couldn't help but roll her eyes. Pay tribute? What a load of crap. Like anyone believed this was anything more than a forced display to keep Sunnyvale looking good after the tragedy.
Reyes glanced at Simon, who had leaned his head back against the seat, looking unusually calm. "So." He said, his voice casual but with a hint of a smirk. "You excited to do your little cheer routine tonight? You get to be on top of the pyramid, right?"
Reyes tried to play it cool, shrugging off the comment. "Nah, I'm just doing it for the extracurriculars."
But inside, her heart was racing. The truth was, being at the top of the pyramid had been a dream of hers for as long as she could remember. The feeling of standing up there, arms outstretched, with everyone watching. It was exhilarating. She'd worked hard to convince Kate to give her the spot. And now that it was happening, she couldn't wait.
Simon raised an eyebrow, clearly not buying her nonchalant act. "Sure, sure. But, you know, I wouldn't make fun of you. If you actually like it, it's cool. Sometimes it seems like you're into the cheerleader thing, and other times, not so much."
