Clara hurried through the darkened streets, her cloak pulled tight around her as she darted from shadow to shadow, scanning for any sign of Sarah or Hannah. The weight of what she was attempting, defying her whole town, pressed heavily on her, but it was nothing compared to the thought of abandoning her friends. The memory of the children, mutilated and silent, haunted her with every step, driving her forward.
Rounding a corner, she nearly ran straight into Dorothea, who was clutching her shawl tightly around her shoulders, her face ashen and fearful.
"Clara!" Dorothea whispered, her eyes widening. "What are you doing out here? It isn't safe."
"I could ask the same of you." Clara replied, her voice hushed. "But listen, I need your help. It's Hannah. They've captured her."
Dorothea's face fell, and she nodded, clearly already aware. "I know. They're keeping her in the church. I heard them say they're not going to wait until dawn. They're planning to do it soon."
Clara swallowed hard, but there was no time for fear. She took Dorothea's hand. "Then we have to hurry. Can you get us inside?"
Dorothea hesitated, glancing around as if to make sure they were alone, and then gave a resolute nod. "Come with me. There's a side entrance only a few of us know about."
Together, they moved silently to the church, keeping to the darkness as they passed groups of townsfolk who were still searching the outskirts for Sarah. The church loomed in the night, its heavy wooden doors shut tight, though faint voices could be heard within. Dorothea led Clara around the side, pausing by a narrow door nearly hidden by ivy. She produced a small, rusty key and slid it into the lock, pushing the door open just wide enough for them to slip inside.
The interior of the church was cold and dark, the faint smell of incense mingling with something sharper and metallic. Clara's stomach churned as she stepped into the shadows, the silence punctuated only by the low, broken sounds coming from further inside. Dorothea led her down a narrow corridor, and as they rounded a corner, Clara's heart twisted.
