The party pulsed with life, a whirlwind of music and laughter that echoed beneath the canopy of stars. The full moon bathed the scene in a silvery glow, illuminating the figures of friends and lovers who embraced one another, some kissing scandalously against the gnarled trunks of trees. Clara soaked it all in, a bittersweet ache blooming in her chest. This freedom, their unguarded joy, the laughter that spiralled into the night, was something she would dearly miss when she left.
As Clara and her friends made their way through the throng, they spotted Isaac and Abigail huddled together, sharing a bottle of mead. Lizzie, ever the instigator, crept up on them, letting out a playful shriek that startled Abigail into spitting out a mouthful of her drink.
"The full moon rises." Lizzie announced, her grin widening as she brandished a small pouch.
The energy shifted as everyone formed a circle, anticipation crackling in the air. One by one, they took a single berry from Lizzie's stash, each one a vibrant shade of deep purple, glistening like jewels in the moonlight. Clara's heart raced at the thought of their potency, but the thrill of the night overtook her rationality. Just this once, she wanted to embrace the wildness of youth, to be swept away in the moment with her friends before her impending departure.
Finally, Hannah received the last berry, cradling it in her palm as if it were precious. "To the fruits of the land." She declared, raising it as if in toast.
Clara felt the effects almost immediately, a heady rush coursing through her veins, lifting her spirit and dulling her worries. The world around her seemed to expand, colours growing richer and sounds more vibrant. She floated toward the fire, where laughter mingled with the crackling flames, and everyone was dancing, their movements fluid and carefree.
However, the euphoria soon turned to chaos as Clara stumbled, tripping over her own feet and tumbling to the ground.
"Careful!" Isaac rushed over, offering his hand to help her up. "We shan't take these berries again for fear we'll all lose our wits."
Clara laughed, grateful for his kindness. "Ah yes, we need to hold tightly to those. Although I suspect that all of Lizzie's wits have already flown the coop."
